NewNews - Heroes of Newerth goes Free to Play

Official Site: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/

Source: Youtube Channel IGNentertainment

Hey MOBA players!  If you haven't heard yet, Heroes of Newerth is now free!  It now follows a very similar business structure to League of Legends.  Every week, there is a 15 character rotation for free2play users.  In-game currency can be accumulated and spent on buying characters to use permanently.  If you had previously bought the game, you will automatically receive a special status that allows the use of all characters like you always have had and will gain access to new characters after a short duration.  If you haven't heard of HoN at all before, it is a Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game that's highly influenced by the popular custom campaign mod on Warcraft 3 called Defense of the Ancients (DotA).  It's a unique Action RPG Tower Defense game where two teams of 5 players battle it out on the field with AI controlled minions pushing into each side's base until their main structure is destroyed.  Players choose a champion/hero/character to play as.  Each of these characters have something they excel in such as being a Tank (taking a lot of damage), an agility type character (damage per second characters) or intelligence characters (lots of damage in each skill, nuking) and play that important role in their team.  Players kill minions and enemy players to gain currency to buy stat altering items and to level up and gain new skills while trying not to get killed themselves while defending their towers and bases.  The ultimate goal is to destroy the enemy's main structure to end the game.  The game is frequently updated and adds new characters and balances to the game regularly to keep the experience fresh.  This goes for all MOBA games: Defense of the Ancients, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, etc.  If you're interested in these types of games, you can also check out "Rise of Immortals" and "Realm of the Titans".

GameLight Review - Terraria

Official Site: http://www.terraria.org/
Buy it on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/

Source: Youtube Channel demilogic

Developer: Re-Logic
Distributor: Steam
Platforms: PC
Release Date: May 16, 2011
Genre: Adventure, Indie, Action, RPG

Pros:
-World is randomly generated which makes exploration for each new world different
-Lots of items, equipment, tools, weapons, materials and content
-Non-linear, you can play the game anyway you like.  It's a sandbox-like game.
-Multiplayer provides many ways of playing including Role-Play, Player versus Player, and Co-op
-New content is regularly added to the game

Cons:
-Gathering the needed materials can be a grind
-Setting up Multiplayer can be a hassle and has some lag sometimes
-You'll have so much fun that you didn't realize the sun is already up

Terraria is exactly the type of game I need after a long day's work and competitive gaming becomes to frustrating to play.  Terraria has a good balance between relaxing gameplay and fast-paced action.  There is no ultimate goal set for the player, so the player is free to choose what they want to do.  Some like to build incredible buildings like art pieces, some like to explore and fight monsters, and others like to compete against other players.  When a world is created, it is randomly generated and allows the player to explore, gather materials, and fight monsters in an on-going adventure where in-game time affects the gameplay and new content is regularly added like an online game would for their MMORPGs.  It is easily explained as a 2D version of Minecraft with more combat and exploration along with the building but has its own special aspects that makes it unique and captivating.  For $10, you can easily get 50-100+ hours out of playing Terraria and even more if you play with friends or other people online.

Graphics
The developers decided to go with a retro pixel art style as their main medium.  Because of this, the game runs very smoothly even on the highest resolution.  The game captures the nostalgia of classic 2D games through its pixel-based sprites, some platforming, and even costumes referencing to many 2D retro games such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda.  The decision to stick with pixel-based sprites also makes it easier for the developers to create new content and quickly add them to the game.  It's also an easy way for players to be able to quickly determine the environment around them due to its simplicity in color contrast and differences.  Even with the classic pixel art, the game still has some lighting effects, particle effects and such which gives it a bit more modern feel.  I couldn't imagine the game in using flash-based vector art or 3D models in a 2D environment.  It would lose its unique charm without things looking so retro.  All the measurements are block based which makes it easier to program randomly generated worlds.  All that's missing is having even more content for the game to expand its library of things to collect and do.  Graphics: 10/10

Audio
Here's where it gets a bit weird.  The music in Terraria are composed of orchestral sounding instruments, 8-bit soundchips, and some electronic drums and synths.  It sounds awkward at first, but it quickly fits in the game.  The music is actually very imperative to the gameplay.  It signifies cues throughout the game to let the player know what's going on.  There's music to tell when it's day time, when it's night time, when the player is 100 meters below the surface, when they're in a corrupted area, etc.  Each track is about a minute long, and they might get annoying to some people (I like it).  I can't say I love it, but the music is catchy, memorable, and works rather well with Terraria.  The sound effects are the usual "swoosh" and "bang" of swords and guns with a few recordings of the player going "ow" or "splat" after the player dies.  You will probably hear "splat" a lot in the beginning as it's not an easy game.  The music and sound effects aren't stellar or mind-blowing, but they really work with the game and more than satisfactory.  Audio: 8/10

Gameplay
Terraria turned out to be a lot harder than I thought, which made me like it even more.  The game challenges the player to adapt to situations, even if the player is free to do what they want.  I didn't know too much about building my own structure, so I spent most of the time in the beginning flattening lands, gathering wood, and killing slimes.  When night came, I experienced the difficulties of not having a house to protect me and was slaughtered by zombies and floating eyeballs 7 times within the night-time in-game.  So much of the gameplay is about exploring, learning from mistakes, venturing off to unknown territories to gain new items and materials, and making the game what the player wants out of it.  I like the exploration and fighting aspects of the game, but I also like some of the more leisurely tasks as well.  So in the game during daytime, I collect materials and build my house.  At night, I forge new weapons, decorate my house, go outside to fight bosses, and organize my backpack.  When I feel ready, I journey off underground or off to the sides of the maps to more dangerous areas to see what I can find.  The player has a ton of things they can do: mine, build, craft, fight, explore, hunt for treasure, PvP, Role-Play, etc.  The reason why it's called a sandbox game is that the world is the player's sandbox, and they can do what they want in it.  It has the exciting aspects of finding new weapons like in Phantasy Star Online (one of my favorite games) and exploring new areas that are really dangerous like in Demon's Souls (became one of my favorite games).  The player can also choose to play on "Hardcore Mode" which really tests the player's ability to play safely and smart and not die.  Normally, a player would lose half the money they carry if they die, but in Hardcore mode, you lose EVERYTHING and your health goes back to the default amount max capacity.  I will try that one day.  Aside from the fighting, exploring, and finding treasure, gathering certain ores (mainly hellstone ores) can be a drag and take hours to get the amount needed for the equipment you want.  And if you play Hardcore mode, it'll just make you want to cry.  I hope the game continues to expand.  Gameplay: 9/10

Replay Value
There are 3 different world sizes (small, medium, large) to create and the positions of areas and items each time a world is made.  The developer is also trying to create enough content so that it allows players to create character builds to have varying play styles.  Along with multiplayer, PvP, hardcore mode, and starting new characters, the game can last quite a while.  For those who mainly play until they've found all the secrets in the world and items, it gets to a point where there's nothing more rare or stronger to get anymore.  So the game isn't perfect for constant replaying, but it's great for those who can be creative in how they play.  Replay Value: 9/10

Overall
I can't express enough of how great of a game this is.  It's a mix of casual with a bit of hardcore with a lot of unexpected surprises.  It's relaxing to gather materials and build structures but it's also exciting fighting bosses and spelunking deep into caves to find treasure.  There are things the developers can do to improve the game such as adding more content, making multiplayer more accessible to the players, and continue to expand the game, but it's enough now to fully enjoy the game in its present state.  For $10, you can spend dozens of hours that you'll continue to have fun with compared to many $60 games that you might spend 7 hours to complete and toss aside (though not all retail games are like that).  What'll be even better is if you can get a few friends to play as the game truly shines during multiplayer.  I haven't been so captivated by a game since I played Demon's Souls (spent 80 hours on that thus far).  Terraria is truly a compelling game that no one should miss out on.  Overall: 9/10

GameLight Review - Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony

Official Site: http://www.finalformgames.com/jamestown/
Buy it now on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/94200/

Source: Youtube Channel FinalFormGames

Developer: Final Form Games, LLC
Distributor: Steam, Direct2Drive, and GamersGate
Platforms: PC
Release Date: June 8, 2011.
Genre: Shoot-em-Up, Indie

Pros:
-Amazing handcrafted pixel based artwork with rich colors and an old-school, retro vibe
-Compelling and challenging, but still easy enough for anyone to pick up and play
-Masterfully produced soundtrack with an orchestral feeling to it
-The ability to play 4-players local cooperatively, a lost and very much missed aspect in modern games

Cons:
-The game can be very difficult, and so it might be a bit hard to convince a friend to play with you
-The core game is rather short, and so the replay value comes from playing the higher difficulty levels
-The rescue ability in multiplayer can't be done in single-player which makes playing solo harder
-No online cooperative play

Bullethell Shoot-em-Ups is a genre that seems to have its own niche in the western gaming community, and so it is rare to see that many be released in the Western market.  When I first heard of Jamestown, the plot and theme was so odd that I didn't know what to think.  However, after one play-through on the highest difficulty I was capable of choosing (called divine which is the 4th hardest difficulty level out of five), I was convinced that the game was just right in every aspect to be very enjoyable.  To my surprise, the game had a very good feel of Japanese shoot-em-ups of the past with its rich sprite art, crazy bullet patterns, and very challenging gameplay.  My fear before playing the game was that it was going to be either too easy, too hard, or have terrible gameplay and controls like many other vertical shoot-em-ups I have played.  If you're looking for a good shoot-em-up or a 4-player co-op game to play, then I urge you to spend just $10 to enjoy this masterpiece.

Graphics
The graphics are all pixel-based sprites and backgrounds which gives it a retro vibe like many Japanese shoot-em-ups.  The theme is a mix between historical 17th century Britain and Sci-Fi space.  The color contrast plays a big part in dodge bullets as they are very prominent on the screen and easy to spot.  The landscapes are beautiful and the enemies are nicely plotted through each level that keeps the player on the edge.  It's very easy to determine what is dangerous, what can be collected, and which player is who.  All the designs, colors, and aspects in the graphics were carefully chosen visually and gameplay wise.  With that said, it sucks to run into an enemy bullet when you clearly saw it coming.  Graphics: 10/10

Audio
The soundtrack is mostly orchestral sounding with some choir and some electronic aspects.  Honestly, the soundtrack isn't very memorable or one that I would listen to that often outside of the game, but it sure is impressive for an indie game.  It has the resounding feel of an epic journey and matches its theme of 17th century Britain despite being out of the ordinary being on Mars.  The sound effects are what you would expect out of a bullethell and works really well with the game and art style.  The audible cues from enemy attacks are an important aspect in the gameplay in knowing what's coming next and being able to react from it.  The quality in music and sound effects are truly high in this indie game.  Audio: 9/10

Gameplay
Seeing how it was an indie developed game, I was unsure of how well balanced the difficulty levels, enemy spawns, and controls were going to turn out as I've had plenty of bad experiences with indie shoot-em-ups.  I've played a lot of bad ones, a few good ones, but none as high of a quality as Jamestown did in terms of the challenge, fairness, controls, and concept aspects.  It's very basic actually.  The player scrolls upwards like any other vertical shoot-em-up, they can move around freely and shoot enemies, have an alternate shot, and instead of a bomb, each player has a mode called vaunt which grants temporary invincibility while making the shots from the player more powerful.  The game can be played stage by stage, or they can purchase with in-game credits caused gauntlet mode which allows players to play the game from beginning to end like a traditional arcade shooter.  There are 4 ships to choose from, but there are 3 that must be purchased with in-game credits by playing through the game.  There are 5 difficulty levels to choose from with the hardest one locked until bought.  And then there's challenges that can be played through by completing one level on Divine difficulty (4th one out of 5) and then buying the other challenges in the shoppe.  The real fun comes from playing multiplayer, but in a modern day of gaming where local multiplayer has died off, it was sad to see that the game didn't provide online co-op play.  Still, even playing singleplayer has its own gratification and entertainment as it is more challenging.  Gameplay: 9/10

Replay Value
There are 5 difficulty levels to choose from in Jamestown, and Bullethell shoot-em-ups don't get interesting until they're played on the most difficult settings.  This allow the player to gradually build up their skill level without having to dive head first into the true bullethell.  With over 5 stages, 5 difficult levels, 4 ships, tons of challenges, the ability to play 4 players co-op, and the addition of Steam achievements (only for Steam users), the game is sure to provide dozens of hours of play which is well worth the $10.  However, for those who are already godly on Bullethell games, this may provide about 5-10 hours of gameplay before exhausting out the most difficult challenges in the game.  It will be up to playing multiplayer to change it up if that's the case.  Replay Value: 8/10

Overall
Jamestown is a really fun game, and is much more approachable than other shoot-em-ups for beginners when trying to convince friends to play co-op.  The game provides a decent challenge when the player has improved and allows the player to choose from 4 different ships which change the play style between each one.  The art style and soundtrack is very welcoming and an enjoyable aspect to the game.  Not having online co-op play is actually a very small setback for the game as it is one of the only few shoot-em-up games to support up to 4 players (usually shumps are up to 2-player co-op).  I highly recommend this game to anyone who like action games, shoot-em-ups, co-op games, or difficult games.  Overall: 9/10

GameLight Review - War Inc. Battlezone

Official Site: http://www.thewarinc.com/
Play it on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/107900/

Source: Youtube Channel WarIncBattlezone

Developer: Online Warmongers Group Inc.
Publisher: Online Warmongers Group Inc.
Distributor: Steam
Platforms: PC
Release Date: July 18, 2011
Genre: 3rd-Person Tactical Shooter

Pros:
-Gameplay is decent and can be entertaining for a Free-to-Play online game
-There are a lot of skills, perks, and equipment to customize a player's loadout and role they play in a team
-The 3rd-Person Perspective allows a player to make decisions a bit more tactically

Cons:

-The game is unpolished and has much room for improvement
-Lag isn’t as apparent as other free online shooters, but it is an issue
-The 3rd-Person Perspective can be more of a hindrance than an advantage

It seems to be a trend in shooters in the past few years that they be put in a 3rd-Person perspective to contrast the excessive amount of First-Person Shooters in the market.  The skills and perk customization is unique in allowing the player to create the type of character that fits their play style and have a role in the team that they’re in.  For a game launched in its first week, the gameplay is decent and provides the core gameplay that allows the player to experience the most basic of shooters; however, the game has much it can improve and add that would make the game feel more complete.

Source: Youtube Channel reznoire

Graphics
The game boasts itself as a realistic, tactical 3rd-person shooter and tries to provide the type of environment that a real warzone would be like.  The cover around each map is ample, but they’re not always situated in the most desirable areas.  The textures are not too bad for a free online game, but they require a strong processor and graphics card to run smoothly as the game isn’t optimized to its maximum ability.  The color palette somewhat blends the players into the environment which can be used as a way of hiding from enemy eyes.  The user-interface for the main menu can be a bit confusing at first, but it’s navigable for the most part.  The user-interface in game is clear and off to the sides which provides plenty of screen space to keep an eye out for enemies.  The 3rd-person perspective can be a problem at times.  I have experienced several times where I am trying to aim at an enemy but lose sight of them because my own character is blocking the way.  The camera angle can be more of a problem when looking out for enemies and aiming at them than having the advantage of peeking through corners and over cover with the 3rd-person perspective.  The decision to have the player’s screen is covered in blood and not indicating where they are being shot from makes the game more of a hide-n-seek rather than tag because of the disadvantage the player being shot at is in.  So despite having decent aesthetic quality in the graphics, War Inc. Battlezone has many flaws in practical designs such as camera angles and hindrance of a player’s view.  Graphics: 6/10

Audio
The sound effects aren’t exactly realistic, but at least they don’t sound like peashooters.  The game is silent for the most part, and the sudden bursts of gunfire can be a bit scary if it’s very close by.  The problem isn’t too much on the recording of the sound effects, but the programming of it.  It was difficult to determine the location of where gunfire was coming from.  The only thing that would help was the mini-map of the enemy’s position, but it wouldn’t have mattered if you were the one being shot at since it’d probably be too late.  With a faulty directional indication of where gunfire is coming from in both audio and visual (mentioned above in graphics), the strategy and tactics are much more limited.  Again, the aesthetic value is decent, but the practicality is lacking within the gameplay. Audio: 5/10

Gameplay
War Inc. Battlezone is a 3rd-Person Tactical Shooter where players complete objectives along with their team while utilizing various skills, perks, weapons and equipment.  The game is free-to-play with the option to buy credits used to acquire additional equipment in the game.  Everything can be acquired with in-game currency, but will take longer to get the amount.  The business structure is similar to that of Riot Games’ “Leauge of Legends.”  For Steam players, there are special packs sold for $10, $25, $40 that gives players certain weapons and credits to start off with.  Going with the 3rd-Person Perspective is definitely a different experience from the First-Person Shooters I’ve played, but it was also difficult to play compared to other 3rd-Person Shooters such as Monday Night Combat, Army of Two, and Rainbox Six Vegas.  For a game boasting as a realistic, tactical shooter, I find it surprising that they didn’t add the ability to hide behind cover.  Being able to successfully fire at an enemy without putting yourself in danger is practically equal to playing a First-Person shooter where you have to peek out.  The only difference is that you can see around corners without poking your head out.  The core gameplay works like most shooters in that you play a certain mode (deathmatch, capture points, capture flag, etc.) and you can help out your team with the special perks and abilities you equipped yourself with.  The game is a bit difficult to control at first since the 3rd-Person Perspective is a bit to the side and so some parts of your peripheral vision is cut off.  There is a bit of issue with lag during crossfire where hitbox contact may not have been read in accordance with the graphics.  In fact, the audio isn’t playing in accordance to the graphics sometimes as seen in the video above.  The game doesn’t push players to work as a team as much as other games have done in the past (Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Monday Night Combat), and so it causes many players to go off on their own.  Some of the fault comes from the design of the game.  Players will spawn far off from their team mates and be isolated far away from gunfire.  Other times, players would spawn literally right behind an unsuspecting enemy.  Weapons can be used by all classes and all players, and so players can hold to their own for the most part.  This is good for those who like jumping into a game and rack up kills, but it’s difficult to coordinate teams during modes like capture point and capture flag.  The controls are thankfully responsive and easy to understand for the veteran shooter gamer.  Aiming takes a bit of getting used to, but players who master it do very well.  The game is playable and can be enjoyable, but it can also be better.  Gameplay: 6/10

Replay Value
The ability to focus on a build and class does give an incentive for the player to earn points and play the game.  The skill building is interesting; however, it limits a player to playing one path.  It is very much like an RPG where a player must stick with the role they chose to play.  It’s possible to mix and match abilities and combine them for a custom loadout, but deviating to too many paths can lead to a useless soldier in the battlefield.  The developers plan to continue the work on the game and add more content (as it says in the steam description, there will be 130+ Weapons to choose from).  For now, it’s just fun to jump on and play a few rounds, but it’s difficult to enjoy to the fullest in its current state right now unless you play a lot or pay real money to acquire the extra equipment. Replay Value: 5/10

Overall
For the most part, I enjoyed playing the game, but felt it was also a game that would be difficult to stick to as more players decide to abandon it.  Servers are already reaching down to the hundreds player count.  As long as the community is kept strong and the game is continually improved, this game can have a bright future ahead.  For now, it’s just an entertaining game to jump onto once in a while to take a break from my main games.  Overall: 5.5/10

GameLight - Resistance 3 Multiplayer Preview

Looks like there's some Beta Multipalyer Online Gameplay up on Youtube:

Youtube Channel RajmanGamingHD

Youtube Channel RajmanGamingHD

I have to admit that one of the best aspects of Resistance 2 was its multiplayer in both co-op and competitive modes.  Resistance 2 was mostly a huge disappointment for me as they took out 2-Player split-screen Co-op Campaign (not the missions, the campaign), the single-player campaign pacing felt very chopped up, the gameplay was like an amalgamation of Call of Duty, Left 4 Dead 2, Halo, and Half-Life, and the story was dreadfully written.  It lost most of its originality and charm of the first one and felt like it had to be like all the other First-Person Shooters to be successful.  After playing through Resistance 2, I didn't plan on ever touching Resistance 3; however, the developers perhaps redeemed themselves and made it good again?  The Multiplayer is looking pretty good, and I heard they brought back split-screen co-op Campaign.  For the sake of getting a multiplayer co-op game, I might pick this one up.

GameLight - Lollipop Chainsaw

I have yet to play the "No More Heroes" series or "Shadows of the Damned", but I plan to.  With those two great games out, developer Grasshopper Manufacture has already announced their next project for the consoles called "Lollipop Chainsaw".  It's a cheerleading schoolgirl who wields a chainsaw to kill zombies.  It's going to be heavily pop orientated with pink light gushing out of a decapitated zombie with pop music and whole lot of bright colors.  It seems as though Suda51 (Nickname of the main developer) had been working on this game alongside "Shadows of the Damned" and is already 70% complete.
Source: Famitsu.com
The game looks wacky and absurd, but it seems to be Suda51's specialty in making a game fun and entertaining.  There isn't much detail on how the game will play, but I suppose it'd be more or less like his past 3 games.  I'll keep an eye out for this one, but I should definitely play their other games first.

GameLight - Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Just after announcing the cancellation of Megaman Legends 3 for the Nintendo 3DS, Capcom reveals 14 new characters to join the next iteration of MvC3.  Hmm, trying to get Capcom fans forget about the sadness of the canceled game?

Source: Youtube Channel OfficialMvC3

I'm not so keen on buying another Disc for the game, but I also really do not like DLCs that much (I like the physical object for games generally).  But despite that, I'm very excited about the new (and a few old) characters joining MvC3.  I haven't much played the game recently because I've been so hooked on Terraria, but I also haven't lost interest in the game either.  MvC3 truly is a great game and one that should continue to grow (without having to keep charging players so much for).  Three new characters I'm excited to play as are Phoenix Wright from the Ace Attorney Series, Frank West from the Dead Rising Series, and Firebrand from the Gargoyle Series (spin-off from Ghost 'n Goblins Series).  I'm also happy to see the return of Strider Hiryu, who I sucked at playing but always chose to play anyways.  It's also a pleasant surprise to see Ghost Rider added after he made a cameo in Dante's Ending, but it's going to suck fighting him after seeing videos of his long reach with the chain.  It's also cool to see Hawkeye get added too.  I think a lot of people are angry about the addition of Vergil and Nemesis as other desired characters were not added when these two were.  The number one character people keep asking back for is Megaman, and with the cancellation of Megaman Legends 3, it keeps reminding the fans the lack of exposure of the blue bomber.  We can only hope.

Complete list of new characters:

Capcom:

Strider
Firebrand
Vergil
Frank West
Phoenix Wright
Nemesis

Marvel:

Ghost Rider
Dr Strange
Nova
Rocket Raccoon
Hawkeye
Iron Fist

NewNews - Megaman Legends 3 Cancelled

It was only a matter of time when Capcom closed the production on this one.  Keiji Inafune had pushed forward on this project and encouraged fans of the series to co-develop along with the developers to create one of the first games heavily developed by the fans. This is how it was looking:

Source: Youtube Channel IGNentertainment

Megaman Legends 3 was planned to be released on the Nintendo 3DS and had a Prototype available for download just a while ago.  The developers encouraged fans to give feedback, suggestions, and concept directions on how the game was going to turn out.  After Megaman creator Keiji Inafune left Capcom last year, fans became skeptical on whether the development was going to continue.  What was said to be a continued effort by Capcom last year has become a sudden halt now.  It's difficult; the recession is still affecting a lot of companies in the industry.  Capcom says that the cancellation of the game has nothing to do with the leave of Inafune, but rather a matter of the game not meeting required criteria.  They have reassured fans that the Megaman Franchise is still a strong series and will continue to grow in the future.  I really hope they do.  I love them Megaman games.

GameLight - Tribes Ascend

Official Site: http://tribesascend.com/

Source: Youtube Channel tribesascend

I never played any in the Tribes, but I remember hearing a lot about how great it was.  Instead of close quarter combat modern war shooters that many FPS tend to lean towards nowadays, Tribes Ascend will be much like its predecessors in fighting on large maps with lots of vehicles and requiring strategy along with the quick trigger finger.  For a free-to-play First-Person shooter, it's looking magnificent.  The game is being developed on the Unreal 3 Engine.  The game is being developed by Hi-Rez Studios, the creators of the highly acclaimed Global Agenda MMO, and is set to release sometime this fall or winter.

VGCulture - Terraria is a time eater

What's happening to me now with Terraria is exactly the reason why I stayed away from Minecraft: I can't stop!  Minecraft was a bit easier to resist since I didn't know too many people who would play it along with me.  For Terraria, I know one other friend who's played over 100 hours.  And after reaching 12 hours of gameplay after one week, I am convinced that 100 hours is not enough.

I was up pretty late last night playing Terraria, and I spent the first hour just tearing down my dirt wall since I realized that NPCs don't come into your house unless you have a stone wall or anything sturdier than that.  I think what makes the game so captivating is that it's relaxing yet still challenging and fun.  I don't have to deal with online players, competitive gameplay, or intense graphics to enjoy playing a game.  It's also the exploration part of the game that's so compelling as the more deeper you go into the world, the more dangerous it becomes with the chance of more rewards.  It's so satisfying to play at my own pace and participating a on-going time-frame that affects the gameplay.  It reminds me a lot of the MMORPGs I used to play where I didn't have to go to a specific spot to do something or grind in an area for long durations.  There is some grinding in terms of finding materials to craft items, but I've never been so excited about crafting new equipment in a game as this one (okay, that's a lie.  I was super into forging new weapons in Demon's Souls).  The game is even more fun playing with a friend and fighting bosses together and experiencing crazy shenanigans in caves.  On Tuesday, I said that dying in the game didn't penalize you.  But I was wrong.  I found out that you lost half your money that you're carrying when you die.  I like it more like that.  It gives me more of a reason to stay alive and be more weary in combat.  And of course, there's my obsession with weapons in this game.  I don't have much except swords, a spear, and a bow.  But later on, there's light sabers, shurikens, and firearms that you can use.  Out of all the games I bought during the summer sale, Terraria was probably the best one and I'll probably get past 100 hours of gameplay sometime near the end of summer.  If you haven't checked the game out yet, do it now (it's totally worth it!): http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/

Things that add up to the time spent playing the game:
-Collecting
-Fighting
-Exploring
-Crafting
-Designing
-Experimenting (yup, lots to do in the game)

VGCulture - Problem with Healers

Yesterday, I posted a video by Dorkly on how White Mages are jerks.  This is funny to the gaming community mainly because of how we can relate to the many healers in gaming and their problem on doing their jobs.

Source: Youtube Channel triplejx3

I play plenty of class based games now and see the patterns and have experienced many different play styles by various people.  Some of these games include: Team Fortress 2, League of Legends, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Resistance 2, and Global Agenda.  About 3 years ago, I started playing healer characters in almost EVERYTHING I play now (Shooters, RPGs, Action Games, MOBAs, etc).  My decision to do so was my frustration with people I play with online not knowing what to do or completely ignoring their position as the healer.  Just because a healer has a weapon doesn't mean it's the best choice for fighting when around a team nor does it make it their primary mission to fight.  Having a healer work together with the team is invaluable and is sometimes the reason for winning.  Here are some simple rules I follow when I play a Healer.

Healer first, Fighter second
My primary mission when being a healer during a team fight for anything is keeping everyone alive.  If someone is less than half health and I'm still shooting at someone who isn't an immediate threat, then I am failing as a healer.  It would probably be more beneficial to keep that rifleman, or assassin, or whoever does damage in the game that you're playing alive and have them kill the player pursuing you than trying to kill them yourself with the weaker weapons and attacks that you possess.  If everyone is at full health and you don't have any healing to do, help them do some damage.  Cover fire, harass, and damage the opponents, but don't ever go in too far because more than likely no one can save you if you're the only healer.

Stay Alive and Survive
Sometimes it's impossible to save your team mates because you get ambushed or they're too brash and run in on their own.  If it comes down to that, don't go in for revenge or clean up because usually healers in games are rather squishy and die really quickly.  At that point, back up and stay alive.  A healer is useless dead and can make it difficult for your team mates.  You can still turn a fight around if you happen to fail to save one player but stay alive to keep another alive.  If the healer dies, more than likely everyone else will die.

Don't follow stupid people
This isn't a general insult to other players and it might be a "duh" sort of rule, but you wouldn't believe how many healers walk into their deaths because of this (and yes I'll admit it happens to me a lot).  Part of being a a healer in a team is trust and partnership.  If you find someone that knows what they're doing and protecting you when you're targeted, then follow that person more because your chances of winning a fight increases dramatically.  But if you happen to heal and follow those who rush in by themselves and get both of you killed or are too focused on what's in front of them instead of the person attacking you, the healer, then it's time to play more carefully and maybe not follow that player.  This rule follows the "Stay Alive and Survive" rule.

Be Alert, ALWAYS!
I'm not gonna lie, being a healer sucks sometimes because there's so much going on.  People will blame you if they die and ask "why didn't you save me? Why didn't you heal me?"  You, and other players, must accept the fact that healers aren't gods.  They can't heal faster than players can die and they are the ones targeted first, if the enemies are smart.  Because of this, you must always be aware of your surroundings.  You have to have one eye on your team's health bar and the other at your enemies proximity.  I think MOBA games such as DotA, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, and Land of Chaos Online are the ones that are difficult to keep everything in check since group fights can be very messy.  Never get tunnel vision as a healer (tunnel vision = focusing on one particular player and ignoring everyone else).  The same can be true for Team Fortress 2, Resistance 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Global Agenda when you can only see what's in front of you.  For First-Person or 3rd-Person Perspective games, I tend to turn around a lot to check what's behind me (though in Team Fortress 2, you do that for every class in fear of the Spy).

Timing is everything
Being a healer in some games are easier than others, but it always comes down to when you perform your actions.  In League of Legends, you would save your ultimate (if it's a healing/invincible) skill for a group fight and your team mates are about to die.  In Bad Company 2, you don't want to revive someone right in the middle of a gunfire exchange because both of you will die and the player you revived will get angry at you.  If you're playing Team Fortress 2 and you Uber (Invincible) a team mate fighting a single scout, then you'll have wasted it and won't have it when the heavy, soldier, demoman, and pyro comes in.  Also, playing a medic is a lot like playing an assassin and knowing when to go in and when to bail out.  Going in and giving that little bit of health to a team mate could possible save them and earn them multiple kills while getting the whole team out alive.  So if you can survive, heal, save, and keep the team in the front lines, then you'll have given the whole team the advantage that the opposing team couldn't achieve.

Playing a healer is self-gratifying and a very hard class to play.  They are unappreciated and are shunned by many when they happen to play poorly (or if the healer really is bad) and pushes players to fight rather than save those who complain.  To others, the healer class is the easiest class as they just sit in the back and press a few buttons.  But healers who are truly great is synonymous to the fighter who bum rushes with kills AND dies a lot compared to the sneaky player who consistently kills players without dying.  Giving some health to a player and working along side with them to push and cover is the major difference in a healer's effectiveness.  So the next time you're playing an online game and you see your opponent team has a brave healer who's always fighting, punish them.  Punish them so hard that they don't want to be a healer class anymore as you'll be doing your opponent's team a favor and getting rid of someone who can't do their job right.

VGCulture - Filler - White Mages Are Jerks

Ever heard of the name Dorkly on Youtube?  They're by the same people who created CollegeHumor.

Sorry to leave all of you with a Filler, but this will lead into an interesting topic for tomorrow.

GameLight - Terraria

Official Site: http://www.terraria.org/

Source: Youtube Channel demilogic

Terraria is a game I HAVE to talk about.  This was recently part of the Steam's Summer Sales and was featured on the last two days of the sale (if you scroll down, you can see them in the images).  It's a phenomenal indie developed game that mixes the sandbox aspects of building with exploration and action/adventure of side-scrollers.  To give (a possibly bad, but helpful) example, the game is like the new generation Castlevania series in that you can freely travel around the world within the game, but everything around you can be manipulated, gathered and recreated like in the indie developed game Minecraft (an equally fun and compelling game).  Terraria is often compared to Minecraft as the "2D version", but I think the difference is drawn in that Minecraft has more of a building and social aspect while Terraria is more of exploration and combat.  The game doesn't have a tutorial and pretty much plops the player right into the world that is randomly generated.  I started off the game like I did in Minecraft and walked around while cutting down trees and picking up dirt blocks.  I had to leave when I first started and came back only to find myself being at night in the game where everything is hard to see.  Suddenly, I start seeing zombies and flying eyeballs close in on me and eat away my life while striking them only scratches a piece of their health off.  I was in danger, I didn't have a strong weapon, and I didn't have shelter.  I had died 6-7 times in the span of that one night in-game time, and that was enough to teach me my first lesson: build a shelter.  Thinking about it, I could've built a barricade around me with dirt blocks and waited out the night.  But I think that's something I like about the game: you learn how to play by learning from your mistakes and experiences (like in Demon's Souls!).  Yes, the game can be a bit intimidating since everything seems kind of confusing, but it was the main attraction in that I could die as many times as I want and the most that will happen is that I get brought back to the spawn point (which is probably bad when playing on large planets).  It made exploration fun and exciting.  There is so much that can be experimented with.  Later, I joined a friend and I started learning more about how the game works.  There are deep caverns underneath that you can dig into and collect ores to craft items and equipment.  I learned how to make a shelter and protect myself from the monsters at night and how to create weapons so that I have an easier time fighting when I need to.  The combat can be anything from easy killings to insane challenges, especially the bosses:

If you like sandbox-like games where you have a lot of freedom of what you want to do as well as classic 2D action games, then you gotta check this game out: http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/

GameLight - Theatrhythm Final Fantasy

Official Site: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/t_ff/

Source: Youtube Channel Snowvilers

With the Steam Sales over (Publisher Packs still available), we can get back to our regular program.  Just very recently, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for the Nintendo 3DS was announced.  It's going to be a Music Rhythm Action Game where you fight monster by tapping to the music on beat.  The game will probably be similar to Rhythm Tengoku and Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!/Elite Beat Agents in that the taps and swiping will be done on the touch screen while the animation will be shown on the 3D Top Screen.  The music will be remixed versions of past Final Fantasy game tunes such as the prelude theme shown above.  I saw some screenshots and I'm not really liking the art style too much, but I am very curious about the the concept and gameplay and will probably be compelled to buy the game just because it's Final Fantasy.

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Last Day

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
 [Today's Deals]
They brought back all the most wanted and best sales today for one last chance to grab.  I have no recommendation specifically since they're all good buys (though a bit more expensive from the first featured sale than this time).

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
There isn't any today so that everyone can work on the ones they've missed so far.

Good luck everyone, and happy gaming.

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 10

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
 [Today's Deals]
-Hitman Franchise Sale - I bought this pack a while back and played a bit of the earliest iteration and I'm failing to see what's so great about the game so far.  I haven't played enough of it, so maybe it'll get better.  It's a 3rd-Person Action game.
-Neverwinter Nights 2 Platinum: $ 6.79 - I was sorely disappointed with this game as the combat in the game is super slow (unrealistically slow).  The customization and content is amazing, but once you start fighting it's so unbearably slow that it's frustrating.  I'm really hoping the next Neverwinter Nights will be different. It's a top-down "Action" (riiiiiight...) RPG.
-Supreme Commander 2: $3.74 - If you like a bit of action and chaos in your RTS games, then this might satisfy that particular desire.  It's a strategy game.
-Dead Space Franchise Sale - Honestly, I think Dead Space is a hilarious game.  Yes, it can be scary, but it can also be really fun and humorous if you know how to face the horrors in a different way.  Think of it like this: weird sickle-like limbed creature comes toward you to kill you.  You chop off their legs and they fall to the ground. You pick up their legs with a gravity pull and chuck it back at their face and it kills them.  You pick up their body and throw it at their buddies behind him and then toss them down a dark chasm.  Yeah, it's pretty fun.  I never beat the game since the game crashed and wasn't able to launch again, so I gave up.  But one day, I will play through the first one and beat it while playing through the 2nd one as well.  Dead Space is a 3rd-Person Shooter Horror Game.
-Prince of Persia Franchise Sale - I wanna get the whole series since I haven't played through it, but I was turned off by the fact that some of them at DRM protections.  Things like these can cause problems when trying to play the game.  If the internet is down, you can't play.  If the DRM doesn't recognize the connection or amount of installs, you can't play.  It's entirely understandable that the companies want to protect their games, but I'm really iffy about the methods used to protect the games as it is affecting the paying customers more than the pirates.  Hmm, seeing how I have a lot of games, I'll buy this pack around winter time then...  Prince of Persia is a 3rd-Person Action Adventure game.
-Duke Nukem Forever: $24.99 - The Duke needs your purchase, but honestly I never had that much interest in the 3D Duke Nukem.  I always liked playing the 2D DN games for some reason. DNF is a First-Person Shooter.
-Portal 2: $24.99 - Eh, for a game that I'll probably play for a few hours with a friend, I rather wait till it's at a much lower price before I get it.  Portal 2 is a First-Person puzzle platformer.
-Terraria: $2.49 - This is the game I was waiting for all this time!  Terrarria is a indie developed game which has a sandbox based gameplay as well as adventure like modes such as exploration and boss battles.  I have a friend who's accumulated over 100+ hours on it already and I am just so compelled by the sandbox gameplay and boss battles that I couldn't resist.  I resisted Minecraft (also a really fun game), but I couldn't resist this one.  Terraria is a 2D Action-Adventure RPG.

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
Some of these Achievements have become a nightmare and I am starting to skip some of them.  I spent hours on some of them and still couldn't achieve them because of the pure randomly generated aspects and chance on some of them.  There's barely any I could do today, which is fine.  I'm getting tired from doing them.
-Post Apocalyptic Mayhem: Adjust a Tuning Slider and save the new setting - Is that an option function?  If so, that's pretty easy.
-X3: Terran Conflict - Destroy a Solar Power Plant - Isn't that something you usually do in the game anyways?  The game looks too complicated for my tastes.
-Portal 2: Never lose a cube in Chamber 6 of the Mobility Gels co-op course - Oh wow, this is gonna be a tough one for Portal 2 players unless they've played it a lot already.
-Hydrophobia: Prophecy: Player must use the environment to take down 3 Malthusians with fire! - More achievements that requires the player to do something totally different to get.
-Nimbus: Bump the meat onto the grill on World 2-4! - If you looked at the game, it seems a bit difficult just to play.  Perhaps bumping a bit of meat to the grill shouldn't be too bad.
-Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter: Find a secret under water - Wow, that is very vague.  The player is going to have to go through the game swimming around everywhere.  I don't remember a secret being underwater from the original, but it's been a while since I've played it.
-Altitude: Interrupt an enemy's afterburners with Loopy's EMP grenade. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. - Is that truly easy?  The game requires knowing how to maneuver to do that.
-Turba: In one combo, clear at least 5 blocks of each color, 2 silver blocks and 1 bomb block.  Those red blocks are real party animals - This is the only game I have for today's missions that I could do.  This shouldn't be too bad.  I don't really like the game unfortunately.  It doesn't do well as a puzzle game and even less so as a music/rhythm game.
-Honest Feedback: Post a comment on a friend's screenshot - as long as you have friends on Steam with at least one screenshot, this should be easy.

Tomorrow's the last day of sales.  I'm very curious as to what it will be.  I've already got most of the games I want except for Brink.  Even then, I'm fearing that the game might be unpopulated like Homefront is.

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 9

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
[Today's Deals]
-The Last Remnant: $9.99 - If you like JRPGs similar to Final Fantasy, perhaps you will like this game.  It's a strategic RPG in that you set up the character's move sets, equipment and skills and let them fight on their own in battle (as far as I heard).  I will try it out one of these days.
-Mass Effect Franchise Sale - With Mass Effect 3 in the works, it's good for those that haven't play any of the previous installments to do so now at very low prices.  I've bought both and am still working on the first one.
-Mafia Franchise Sale - I'm actually not sure what to say about the series since I haven't played it yet.  A friend of mines got it a while ago and said it was pretty good.  It's not too long to get through the main part of the story.
-Divinity 2: $19.99 - I've never heard of it outside of the steam stores and I don't hear about this game from the media or my friends, but the trailer makes it looks so compelling!  The graphics looks amazing, the gameplay has dynamics, and it seems like an RPG that could last a while.
-Dirt 3: $33.49 - Wow, that's pretty expensive for a sale.  I've heard good things about the game, but I don't have enough interest in racing games to get this one (unless someone gives me a wheel controller and pedals!)
-Worms Reloaded: $4.99 - Worms has been around forever, and little has changed.  The humor is still screwy and the gameplay is still fun along with the addition of online play and such.
-Fallout 3: $10.19 - I've been waiting for this one to get under $10 for the longest time (and it still isn't, but close enough).  Fallout 3 is a First-Person Shooter RPG that takes the intriguing environment and crazy characters of the originals and mixes it with fast-paced action of an FPS.
-Red Faction Armageddon: $33.49 - This just released recently and has improved quite a lot from previous installments.  It features the ability to reconstruct destroyed items and environments as well as blow them back up (destructible environment).  This installment is also in the 3rd-Person rather than the First-Person view like the original.
-Splinter Cell Franchise Sale - Splinter Cell is one of the very few games (that I know of at least) to successfully bring a immersive and tension binding stealth game from the few that are already out there.  Conviction actually is less stealthy and more action, but rewards the player for being more sneaky.
-Empire & Napoleon Total War: $10.19 - If you like a bit more realism and tactics in your Strategy games, then Total War Empires is for you.  This is one of those strategy games that can be play for hours and hours.  I have a friend that's been playing for years and is still not sick of it.
-Amnesia: $4.99 - This is a indie developed horror adventure game that captures the essence of fear into a game.  It has received a lot of positive feedback and is talked about quite a bit through the industry.  During winter sales, it was still $10.  I think I'll finally get it now.

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
Remember there was a achievement for the game Sanctum yesterday?  Well, I ended up buying the game and realized that the level needed for the achievement is the last one!  You know how evil and difficult that is?  It took me an hour (and something minutes) just to beat the first level!  Honestly, the ones creating the achievements for this year's activities is just cruel (or greedy in the perspective of a publisher wanting players to play the game longer).
-Universe Sandbox: Plunge the Earth into the Sun - That's terrible!  But jokes aside, I think that should be an easy task considering that the game is a sandbox model game.
-Worms Reloaded: Take exactly 31 damage from a worm with 100 health - Ew, another achievement that requires every drop of focus and concentration just to get it right.  I took nearly an hour doing the achievement for AudioSurf yesterday.
-Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time: Fall into a pit of lava 3 times - Yes, die on purpose!
-1...2...3...KICK IT! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby): Get 50%+ of the maximum score AND 50,000+ points with any song on City 15 - The game uses the same engine they used to create AaaAaaaAA - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity (man, such long and wordy titles...) except that you can use your own music to create the levels outcome.  The Achievement sound very difficult.
-Galcon Fusion: Win 5 Rounds in Multi-player Billiards - Seems like I'll have to log online for this one.  The game was fun for a while, but I get bored after a while.  There are tons of clones of this game.
-Winter Voices: Achieve a 100% success in the third encounter of the prologue (departure of the father), after walking on the 'Summer Scent' - This might require some players to find some FAQs or walkthroughs as Adventure games can last quite a while and it would suck to mess up near the end and having to do it all over again.
-Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2: Retribution: Kill 5 Banshees in the Bloodied Colloseum - That shouldn't be too hard, right?  Just go into that level and kill 5 units.
-Day of Defeat: Source: Win a round on each of the winter themed maps: DoD_Kait and Dod_Colmar - This might be difficult.  Not only is it hard to win a match in this game, but the game isn't very populated anymore and consists mainly of zombie mod players.  I always seem to buy multiplayer games that aren't played much or at all lately.
-Wish upon a star: Build a wishlist of 10 items - If you're doing these achievements because of the grand prize, you should have already done this.  If it doesn't register as being completed, move an item around and click save and it should say you've completed it.
-Show time: Post your own video in Steam - I've never tried this out, and I guess it's a good time to test it.

There's a lot of good game sales today, so take advantage of it while you still can.

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 8

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
[Today's Deals]
-Dead Rising 2: $19.99 - I never figured out whether this game was 2-player local on PS3.  I plan on getting it one day for console since I enjoyed playing the first one (on Wii too, the less version of the original).  Dead Rising 2 is a 3rd-Person Action game.
-Quake Franchise Sale - This is for the Quake fans or the curious as all the games are super old (like, blockier than N64 3D old).  Quake is a First-Person Shooter.
-Tomb Raider Franchise Sale - I never had too much of an interest in Tomb Raider since it involved a lot of restarting after dying once.  There are so many ways to die in that game.  Guess that demo back in the Playstation one days just gave me a bad impression of the game.  Tomb Raider is an 3rd Person Adventure game with the exception of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light being a top-down action-adventure game.
-Cities XL 2011: $7.99 - The graphics for this game is amazing and beautiful.  I really want to play the game, but I feel like I'll be spending so much time on it that I'd be neglecting the other tons of games I have piled up.  Cities XL 2011 is a simulation game.
-Sanctum: $3.75 - I finally tried the demo out and I'm torn between wanting to buy it and totally ignoring it.  I like the concept, but I feel like a lot is missing from the game.  I would've liked more weapons and the ability to play with multiple people (like 4-8 players) rather than just being restricted to two-person co-op (unless I found someone that'd be willing to play the game).  Sanctum is a First-Person Shooter / Tower Defense Hybrid.  It's fun, but I think it could be better.  Ugh, should I get it just to play solo???
-Command and Conquer Franchise Sale - I haven't played a C&C game in a loooooong time, and I have a few of them.  I stayed away from RTS games for the longest times mainly because it takes quite some time just to finish one chapter of each mission.  I honestly really like to play RTS games, but I feel they take too much time when I also wan to play other games as well.  I'll play RTS again one day, starting with Starcraft 2 which I bought the first week...
-Street Fighter IV: $14.99 - As a Street Fighter fan, "I'd say don't buy it!"  Get Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition which just released on Steam.  The game has an additional 14 characters, a lot more content, an extra special attack from each character, and tons of adjustments.  I'm preparing to get SSFIV: AE on PS3 sometime soon since my computer can't handle the graphics really well.  SFIV is a traditional Fighting game.
-Company of Heroes Franchise Sale - Company of Heroes is a unique Action RTS where the focus is more on the fighting rather than the resource collecting.  I played this at a friend's house and it realized how intense it could be when resource collecting isn't the issue.  A small map took us 2 hours to complete.  It was fun, but I couldn't play through the whole game if it took that long for each map.
-Rift: $9.99 - If it weren't for the monthly subscription, I'd buy this game in a heartbeat.  Rift is a MMORPG that features the ability to switch between different builds for each of the classes which varies the type of style of gameplay for each situation.  If this game ever goes Free-to-Play, I'm jumping in to join the fun.
-Counter-Strike Source: $4.99 - If  you don't know what Counter-Strike is, shame on you.  CSS is the recreation of the classic Half-Life mod that became the number one online game using the Source engine.  The community in CSS is still strong and populated, so there shouldn't be a problem jumping into a game and being able to enjoy this classic game of Terrorist vs. Counter-Terrorist.
-Risen: $10.19 - I'm actually not sure what to say about this game.  It's an RPG.  I have somewhat of an interest to try it, but at the same time I consider all the other RPGs I've got to still finish.
-Audiosurf: $1.49 - Turn your music into the tracks you surf on in this puzzle/music Rhythm, pseudo racing game.  The beats of a song turns into points and bumps on the road, so it visualizes and utilizes the music in part of the gameplay.  There are several different modes to play as well as a local two-player co-op mode (which you can also play solo with).

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
-Sanctum: Start the party on Glade - What does that mean?  Considering that I might buy the game, I guess I'll find out.  After beating the demo, there were characters dancing around.  So maybe I'm supposed to beat the level "Glade"?  Ugh, I hope it's not too far into the game.  The game is quite time consuming.
-Audiosurf: Turn 21 blocks red with a single paint - This can be either easy or really hard depending on how many block I have and when I happen to run into a red paint (the highest point color).
-Counter-Strike: Source: Get 2 kills standing in the same spot with a zoomed sniper rifle - I think I can do that.  As long as I go against "easy" computer AI, I think this one will be as easy as getting camp kills.
-Tidalis: Create A Combo At Least 6 Deep - Seeing how combos in puzzle games happen by chance, this achievement can vary for each player.
-Metal Drift: Achieve 5 kills on each map - I don't know how many maps there are, but wouldn't that take a long time since it's technically going through the whole game?
-The Wonderful End of the World: Reset the game, and complete the entire thing in one sitting - WHAAAAT?  Is the game short or something?  Playing through a game in one sitting usually takes a lot of time, especially if the player never played the game before.
-Poker Night at the Inventory: Win a hand with a 6 card and a 9 card of any suit - I guess you can create a straight, but that doesn't mean you'd win with that hand.  I would've gotten this game if it were more heavily involved with Team Fortress 2.  So instead of getting 4-5 items, players would be able to gain all sorts of items as well as bet against other players with TF2 items.  By the way, the game is one-player.
-Fate of the World: Hooked up space solar power arrays by 2110 - I have no idea what that means, but good luck with it.
-Movie Night: Download and watch a trailer in Steam - Sounds easy enough.

Only 3 more days left to get what you want and to complete those achievements for prizes.

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 7

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
 [Today's Deals]
-The Sims 3: $13.60 - If you're looking for a game to play for hours on end and to keep you occupied for large portion of the year, then this is a good game to get.  It is because I barely have time to play games now that I try to stay away from such addicting games that eats up time like this one.
-Jamestown: $4.99 - This is an indie developed shoot-em-up that features 4-player co-op, pixel based sprites, and the ability to bring your team mates back from death rather than sharing a pool of lives.  I'm definitely going to get this one.
-Killing Floor: $4.99 - If you're thinking that you wouldn't be interested in this game because you already have Left 4 Dead 2, then let me assure you that it's a different experience and is a lot of fun.  Killing Floor is a round based survival horror First-Person Shooter (rather than being a progressive level like in L4D).  It features a lot more weapons, a class and leveling system, a lot of levels that are added on frequently for free, and 6-player co-op.
-Prototype: $14.99 - I like to think of Prototype as Grand Theft Auto except you're supposed to destroy everything.  You are the ultimate weapon in a open-ended gameplay where you follow the story of a horrible incident that caused all the problems in the city, but you also get to run around the streets, fly over buildings, and deal a lot of carnage.  Prototype is a 3rd-Person Action Adventure game.
-Left 4 Dead 2: $4.99 - It's undeniable that L4D2 is a fun game, and if you still don't have it yet, you are missing out.  L4D2 is more casual compared to other zombie games such as Dead Rising, Killing Floor, and Resident Evil as it's much easier to understand and involves a lot of team-play interactions.  To top off zombie killing, you get to BE the zombies in versus mode and cause a lot of mayhem for the hapless survivors.
-Grand Theft Auto IV Pack: $9.99 - This pack includes the 2 stand alone games relating to GTA4.  GTA4 is a really fun sandbox game where it's like a virtual playground as well as a immersive story to give the player a main goal to achieve.  I've had the PS3 version for years now, and I barely play it.  It's a fun game, and I should play it more often.
-FarCry 2: $4.99 - I heard many great things about this game, but it's not a game I hear anyone I know talk about.  It uses the CryEngine, which the company has been relentlessly working on and improving, which shows off all the modern technology of computer graphics, physics, and editing capabilities.  Maybe I should play this game one day, but I'm not sure if I want to get it now.  My computer may not be able to run it.
-Lost Planet 2: $19.99 - Lost Planet 1 was an interesting and satisfying experience for me, and thought I'm not finished with LP2, I think a lot of people are missing out on it.  LP2 is rather unappreciated as it boasts 4-player co-op, large scale boss battles, and some pretty wicked level designs.  Perhaps fans of the first one were a bit put off by the more linear level designs in the second one.  I'd say get this if you can convince 3 other friends to join you.

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
Really, some of the achievements this year is so ambiguous and difficult to perform that it makes me wonder why they would do it.  I doesn't make the player like the game anymore than they would have if they played normally, and in fact I think it makes them more frustrated and angry with the game.  Anyways, let's hope the today's achievements aren't as bad.
-Killing Floor: Kill a circus Scrake with a crossbow - This shouldn't be too bad if you're playing on Easy difficulty.  Just be sure you stay alive long enough to see a Scrake (the tall zombie with a Chainsaw).
-Atom Zombie Smasher: Rescue at least 100 people in July - I haven't played the game, but it sounds hard.
-Left 4 Dead 2: Survive the Cold Stream campaign on any difficulty - I think that's the new map that was in beta testing.  I hope it's not hard, I'll try it out.
-RUSH: Complete the Solar Flare level - Sounds like you just need to get to a certain part of the game, that's all.  It shouldn't be too bad as long as it's not very far into the game.
-Spiral Knights: Add the Firecracker bomb to your arsenal - Now how do I get that?  I'm going to have to look it up because I'm not going to play several hours on end just to find one item.
-Guardians of Graxia: Hit at least three enemy units simultaneously using either the Hell Storm or Wild Fire spell cards. - Sounds like you have to get those cards before you can even perform that action.
-BIT.TRIP RUNNER: Bump into a fire in a Bonus Challenge - Oh cool, I'd probably accidentally do that anyways, even if it weren't an achievement.

I'm sooooo behind on achievements, but I've got all the main prizes I wanted, so maybe I can ease up on it.  The plus side is raising my chances of winning the grand prize, which I highly doubt I'd win anyways.

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 6

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
[Today's Deals]
Oh wow, there aren't as many games I can talk about this time since I don't know too much about them.
-Monday Night Combat: $3.74 - If you like Team Fortress 2 and Defense of the Ancients/League of Legends/Heroes of Newerth, then this is a game you have to check out.  Fast paced 3rd-person shooting/fighting action with the strategic tactics of Action Tower Defense games like DotA.
-Beat Hazard: $2.49 - I'd say this game is worth it if you like arena shooters.  It's really hard at first since the graphics are blaring and it's difficult to distinguish between your own shots and the enemy's bullets.  The music you choose affects the power of your gun and the types of enemies that come out.  Don't forget to buy the Ultra expansion if you want the extra features.
-Deus Ex: $2.49 - Considered to be one of the greatest PC games of all time (as I keep hearing), Deus Ex provides a lot of freedom in how an objective is fulfilled.  It's a mix between First-Person Shooter, Stealth and has RPG elements such as information gathering, ability leveling, and item acquisition.  I'm still working on the game, but I do see a lot of the reasons why so many gamers love this game so much.
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: $9.99 - I'm not sure what the multiplayer is like anymore (whether it's populated or not) mainly because I haven't played it in a long time and I have it on PS3.  The game is truly magnificent and is the one that got me into the CoD series.  If you want to play the game mainly for it's Single-player, this game is worth it then.  If you're looking for a multiplayer experience, I can't tell if it's worth it or not.

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
-AI War: Fleet Command: Accumulate a net energy balance of 300,000 - That sounds like it would take a while.  I don't know how the game flow works for this game.  A lot of steam achievements this year is really hard!
-Monday Night Combat: Kill another player with an explosion with your back turned from them - Hmm, that might be hard.  I'm not particularly good at that game and it's hard to kill in general.
-Beat Hazard: Strip the turrets off 2 bosses and keep them alive for 60 seconds - errr, I need to find a long song with two bosses that has turrets on them.
-Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood - Kill 25 Chickens - This should be easy.  There's a mode specifically for killing chickens!
-Nation Red:  Start a game in Strategic Mode and pick only four perks: Fire Starter, Friendly Fire, Remote Detonator and Molotov, then detonate 12 Molotov grenades in one game - That sounds confusing, but I'll give it a try.  Nation Red got a lot of new content since the last time I played it.
-And Yet it Moves: Cool down a sweating bat with a drop of water in The Great Escape - I never played the game, so I don't know what it's like.
-Play Time: Play a free game demo - Yay, free steam achievement!

Time's passing by quickly, it's Day 6.  Buy what you want before it shoots up 2-5 times its sale price!

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 5

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
[Today's Deals]
-Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword: $3.74 - Mount & Blade is truly a unique RPG experience where the player has a LOT of freedom in where the want to go and what they want to do next.  It accentuates the use of a horse (mount) in large scale warfare that most European medieval games leave out.
-Fallout New Vegas: $14.99 - For that price, I really want it.  Problem is that I wanted to play through Fallout 3 first, which is the same price.  Sigh, I think I'll wait till Winter sales for this one and maybe get Fallout 3 first.  Fallout New Vegas is a First-Person Shooter RPG.
-Doom 3: $4.99 - The game is fun, but I got bored of it after a while and quit playing it.  Doom 3 is a Horror First-Person Shooter
-Homefront: $24.99 - Ugh, why can't it be cheaper!?  Well, I guess it is kind of new.  I've heard about this game since seeing it all over the LA Convention center at last year's E3.  The game seems fun, but I'm afraid that the multiplayer community might be dead already and $24.99 for a single-player experience isn't really worth it (which I heard was very short).  I'll consider this...Homefront is a Tactical First-Person Shooter.
-Bionic Commando Rearmed: $4.99 - THIS IS A MUST BUY!  Seriously, if you grew up in the 2D platformer retro gaming days, this is a game that you must try out.  The game captures the original perfectly (which I played through before I bought it) and has an amazing remixed soundtrack that will blow your mind.  There's the original campaign, 51 Challenges, 2-player co-op, and 4 player versus.  BC Rearmed is a 2D Action Platformer where you swing rather than jump.
-Singularity: $7.49 - I've heard decent things about the game, but I'm not too interested in it.  I think it's a First-Person Shooter/Puzzle game of sorts?
-Serious Sam HD: $7.99 - Don't take the game too seriously if you're interested in getting it, I'm serious.  The most serious thing about the game is how quirky and ridiculous it can get.  16 player co-op, large maps, tons of weapons, challenging puzzles, and crazy multiplayer deathmatchs.  Serious Sam is a First-Person Shooter.
-Bully: $3.74 - Again, this game comes out and makes me wonder if I should get it.  I think it's a free-roaming action game where you perform various tasks to progress the story, much like GTA.  Bully is a sandbox Action Game, I think...
-Alpha Protocol: $4.99 - From the guys to made Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 (not 1, that was BioWare) brings an espionage RPG where I heard the freedom isn't as non-linear as it sounds.  I'm still interested since I like stealth games and RPGs.
-R.U.S.E.: $10.19 - It's a strategy game based around deceit and trickery (a ruse) so that it can divert your opponent's attention somewhere else while you use your real army to go in for the attack.
-Trine: $1.99 - This is a puzzle platformer game based around a physics engine which I found to be quite interesting.  It's more fun to play with 3 people, and you can do so if you have 2 extra controllers along with someone playing on mouse and keyboard.

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
Wow, the achievements are really hard this year.  The Iron Grip Warlords achievement took me 1.5 hours to get, and the steam servers went down so it didn't register.  I'm going to have to do it again...
-Mount & Blade: Warband: As a Female Character, give a companion character a great sword. - I wonder how hard it is to find a great sword.  I haven't played the game in a while, but I think that feat will take some time to do.  Dang all these long/hard achievements!!!
-Zombie Driver: Make a barbecue of 20 zombie dogs in a single slaughter mode match. - Shouldn't this be easy?  Just get a flame thrower and burn down 20 zombies right?  I'll have to find out.
-Fortix 2: Collect 50 sunflowers on Greemland or Classic levels. - Isn't that what you normally do in the game?  All the easy achievements are on games I don't have!
-Homefront: Complete chapter 2 in the Single Player Campaign - That's so easy!  Just play the friggin' game normally and get an achievement?  How unfair.
-Trine: Stay Underwater for 40 sec without taking damage - The hard part will be finding a level with water.  I beat that game last year.
-Serious Sam HD: Drown an Enemy - I don't know how hard that is, I played second encounter, not the first one.  I think it's just finding an enemy and then shooting him into water.
-Say Cheese: Post a screenshot - As usual, Valve will provide at least one easy one each day.

Ugh, losing more money and falling behind in Achievements.  I can't even download and install my games in time, haha.  Day 5!

GameOn - Steam Summer 2011 Day 4

Official Site: http://store.steampowered.com/
 [Today's Deals]
-Dragon's Age 2: $35.99 - I've done a GameLight of this game before.  The PC version is more of a top-down feel like Dungeon Siege 2 while the console version feels more like a Hack-n-Slash.  They're both exactly the same games, but they feel very different.  As much as I liked this game, I'm going to hold out and get it for PS3.
-Torchlight: $2.99 - If you're one of the gamers waiting for Diablo 3 to come out, get this game to fill in the time.  It's single player only, but it has very similar gameplay in that it's a top-down point-n-click RPG.  It's a fun game, but I don't play it enough to have beaten it yet.  I really should...
-Assassin's Creed Franchise Sale - A mix between stealth and action, the Assassin's Creed series has evolved quite a lot from what I've heard.  Brotherhood has some of the best gameplay elements along with multiplayer from what I heard.  Mmm, so tempting...
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: $19.99 - Only get this for the single-player, because the community for multiplayer is dead.  I can't even get into a game anymore because of how unpopulated multiplayer is now, so sad.  CoD: MW2 is a Tactical First-Person Shooter.
-Kane & Lynch 2: $4.99 - I'm very tempted to get this for just $4.99, but I heard it wasn't that great of a game and is more focused on a two-player co-op game mechanic.  I don't know anyone who would be willing to get this game either, sooooo I'm probably going to pass.  K&L2 is a 3rd-Person Shooter.
-Sniper: Ghost Warrior: $4.99 - I tried this game, and it was horribly optimized for the computer.  Considering your computer is strong enough, the gameplay revolves around a lot of linear tasks.  You sneak around, kill a few guys once in a while, and then at some point you snipe someone and then run away.  I probably didn't play enough of the game, but I gave up after the first mission.  Sniper is a first-person shooter/stealth game.
-Two Worlds 2: $17.00 - I tried this at E3 2010 and I honestly didn't like it as much.  It's a 3rd-person action RPG, but each attack had a cool-down which made the action part of the game really slow.  From what I've read online, TW2 is a huge improvement over its predecessor which I saw at Target for about $5-$10.  I'll eventually give this game a chance later on.  I'm not willing to dish out $17 for a game I might not like.
-Transformers: War for Cybertron: $7.49 - I'm very curious about this game and would like to play through it, even though I'm not a huge fan of Transformers (I did like the animated series though).  I'm afraid that the multiplayer community is probably dead, but $7.49 for a single-player experience isn't too bad (wish it was $4.99, but beggars can't be choosers).  Maybe I'll get it...

[Steam Achievements - Daily Missions]
ARGH, I don't have most of the games for the daily missions, only Iron Grip: Warlord...
-Defense Grid: The Awakening: Beat all 5 'Out of Bullets' Challenge modes without using Gun or Cannon towers - I already test through enough tower defense games for work, I don't think I'd be interested unless there's a twist like with DotA, Monday Night Combat, or Land of Chaos Online.
-Men of War: Assault Squad: Complete the Steam summer sale bonus mission - Oh, so I guess it's a special mission just for the occasion rather than having to do something in-game.
-Flight Control HD:  Open all umbrellas simultaneously on the Stunt airfield - I don't have the game, but that sounds hard.
-The Polynomial: Space of the Music: Use the Sun to Kill an Enemy - The game honestly wasn't that fun and had little to do with music other than seeing lights inside the game flash in rhythm.  It didn't affect the gameplay at all.  There's a demo for you to try if you want to see for yourself before you buy.
-A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda: Trick a Bomber to hit and destroy a Zytron Walker (LA) - I wonder if I should get this game.  I don't like it as much as old classic games as it tries to imitate, but it was kind of interesting.  It's $4.99 at the moment.  The achievement sounds easy enough.
-Iron Grip: Warlords: Purchase every available weapon and upgrade - I've had this game for about 2 years now, and I have to say that this might be a bit difficult to do.  Mainly because the game usually ends too quickly (win or lose) to be able to buy everything possible.  I'll still try it out, I haven't played the game in a while.
-Write home: Recommend a game to your friends - Easy!  Just choose a game and then write a recommendation for it.

Day 4, I'm probably going to be spending the most today...
