VGCulture - I Am Street Fighter - 25th Anniversary Documentary

Youtube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/streetfighter

I'm surprised I didn't see this before, but the Street Fighter Documentary was released officially to watch on Youtube!  Street Fighter, like to many other gamers, has been an influential part of my gaming life and is what got me into fighting games.  Street Fighter 2 had set the standards and shown the capabilities of what a fighting game could be.  The graphics, music, defined mechanics and controls, characters, and story made Street Fighter such a memorable experience in all aspects.  Just hearing a small tune from a characters theme strikes immediate recognition to the character and level.  The intense competitive nature leaves all sorts of experiences for players who have played the game.  And from Capcom's first Street Fighter till now, a lot has changed yet a lot remains the same.  For the longest time, it seemed like Street Fighter had become more underground and attracted a niche group of gamers despite how many Street Fighter games had released.  Capcom wanted to bring back the community, the excitement and memories that Street Fighter fans had before.  I think Capcom had done a great job of bringing Street Fighter back to forefront of the Fighting game scene with Street Fighter IV.  Although I don't agree with their practices in re-releasing their games in more definitive versions with each of their games (SF4->SSF4->SSF4AE->USF4 or MvC3->UMvC3 or Dragon's Dogma->DD:Dark Arisen), they really do make games that pleases their fans even if they happen to upset them at the same time (Tekken X Street Fighter on-disc DLC).  I haven't watched the Documentary myself yet, but it should be fun to go down memory lane and see the legacy of Street Fighter unfold itself.

NewNews - Ghosts 'n Goblins Online is Back!

Steam Greenlight: Ghosts 'n Goblins Online
Source: Youtube Channel 씨드나인 게임즈

Ghosts 'n Goblins Online has been around for a while and has been talked about in the game community and then it was canceled.  Apparently it's been canceled twice already.  Well it's back again with a chance to release stateside through the help of Steam Greenlight.  With news of this, every major media is spreading the word and hopefully getting people to upvote it on Steam Greenlight.  The main concern for a lot of GnG fans is that the game looks too easy.  Looking at the gameplay, I'd say that it's because it's a completely different gameplay mechanic from what most people know about the GnG series.  The game is still a 2D Action-Platformer, but rather than a straight up Action game where you move forward, die in two hits, and have limited amounts of way to attack, there are a lot of RPG elements such as an open world to explore, stats to improve, lots of skills to attain, etc.  You could say that it's Maple Story in a GnG universe.  There seems to be different classes with an array of skills to learn, the ability to play cooperatively with other players, raise stats and attributes to improve survivability, damage, and ability power, and play in competitive PvP arenas.  There seems to be a mode called "demonic dimension" where you die in two hits (classic GnG style life system: Armor->Underwear->Dead).  There's a trailer showing some of the gameplay:
Source: Youtube Channel 씨드나인 게임즈

With this, yes the game will be easier to accommodate an online gaming experience as well as a more general audience.  Still the game looks to be very interesting and is one I'm willing to play.  A lot of people are also hoping that the attention and success of this game might bring about the resurrection of Megaman Online and bringing it over here.  I'd be very happy about that.

NewNews - Deep Down Trailer

Source: Youtube Channel cogmovie

There's finally a trailer for Deep Down!  Or so I thought.  The video reveals some futuristic themes going on with Medieval themes during combat that's familiar to the Demon's Souls and Dark Souls series.  We hear that one of the characters can see memories from an object, so perhaps there's an Assassin's Creed thing going on here where the character sees the memory of a place by re-enacting it through gameplay.  The music really doesn't match the theme, but I like it.  From what is told, the game is an Online Multiplayer Action-RPG.  Although it still doesn't show or explain much in terms of gameplay, it does give us a little more in-sight to what this game might be about.  It's one of the new IPs for the Playstation 4 that I'm really excited about.  This game will be kept under wraps and probably won't resurface until February 2014 when the Playstation 4 launches in Japan.  I'm looking forward to it.

NewNews - Capcom's Deep Down Teased

Source: Youtube Channel cogmovie

Pictures of project Deep Down was shown at the reveal of the Playstation 4 and no word of it has been mentioned of it since then.  Well it seems like the game will be a Online Multiplayer RPG of some sort.  It will utilize a new engine Capcom has revealed called Panta Rhei and from the screenshots they've shown, it looks really good.  From the few seconds of flashing video clips up above, I suspect those are in-game footages and not pre-rendered footages.  A lot of games make their cut-scenes right in the game's engine so that the flow between story telling and gameplay is seemless.  I suspect that we'll be seeing even more of that on the next generation console games.  I'm not sure how an Online Multiplayer RPG will work just yet, but I'm excited to see what Capcom has in store for us.

NewNews - Phoenix Wright 5 release in the West Fall 2013

Japanese Site: http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutensaiban/5/
Source: Youtube Channel GamesHQMedia

We finally get confirmation that Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney 5 - Dual Destinies is going to be released in the West this Fall, yay!  Unfortuantely, it's also been confirmed that it will be released digitally only, boo!  Phoenix Wright 5 will bring back our favorite protagonist back to the series once more with a new sidekick helping by reading the emotions of those on testimony.  Prepare for a brand new adventure with 3D graphics for the Nintendo 3DS.

As for my stance on a "digital only" release, I never really liked the idea when it was first conceived and has only changed my perspective a little throughout the years.  With most consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii) and now handhelds (PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS), games sold digitally are the same prices as retail and almost never gets a price drop; games rarely get a sale on digital distributions; games can't be borrowed or shared by friends because the games are locked onto the system or account; and they take up even more memory space than when just having the game that require an optional/require install which eventually leads to un-installing games if you run out of space and re-installing them if you want to play them.  Digital releases do have their conveniences for the customer such as not having to go to the game store to grab their game and not having to switch out discs/cartridges to play multiple games but it takes away other great aspects of retail sold games.  My opinion of digital distribution changed a little when Valve's Steam platform provided better services and great deals on a daily basis.  Games that I really like that I want to pay more money will generally lead me to buy a boxed version of the PC game (Diablo 3/Guild Wars 2), but having great deals of under $10 per game on Steam allowed me to play games I'm interested in without having to invest so much on them.  I'm not looking forward to an all digital market.

NewNews - Monster Hunter Online in China

Source: Youtube Channel GamesHQMedia

Looks like another Monster Hunter game is not going to see the West again with Capcom and Tencent working together on releasing Monster Hunter Online in China.  It utilizes the technology of the CryEngine 3 so the graphics and animations are really beautiful.  It will be released as a free-to-play MMO with a micro-transaction system to keep the game afloat.  I can see why Capcom would be hesitant to try that in North America and even Europe considering the competition and the lower success rate that free-to-play MMOs have in the Western market.

From a gamers point of view, this would be really cool.  Instead of going from one pocket of enemies to another in most MMORPGs, Monster Hunter Online would be all about one epic boss fight after another.  We can only hope that Monster Hunter Online might get to see the light of day over in the West, but at least we got Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (if only the 3DS version had online play).

NewNews - Project X Zone NA launch will get extra stuff

Official Japanese Site: http://pxz.channel.or.jp/
Source: Youtube Channel NintendoWorldReport

3DS Tactics collaboration Project X Zone involving a collaboration between 3 major game companies has a surprise for gamers in North America.  Joystiq just shared that nice tidbit about the launch copies of Project X Zone in NA.  Along with the $40 game, those who purchase the game at launch will get a mini-artbook, a poster, and a music CD.  I'm hoping it's the full soundtrack, but I've bought 2 games with soundtracks with them in the past and they turned out to be special tracks.  It's great and all, but it'd also be nice to have the full soundtrack of a game to listen to.  With so many distinguishable characters and series in this one game, it's sure to be filled with lots of memorable themes from their respective games.

Also, Project X Zone has an official launch date now: June 25, 2013.  I think it's one of the few games I'm buying on day one this year.

GameLight - DuckTales Remastered

Capcom Blog: WOO-HOO! DuckTales is back
Source: Youtube Channel CapcomUnityVideos

I guess this was revealed at PAX East and then caught wind everywhere else.  I saw this posted on facebook multiple times but didn't care too much about it.  I didn't get to play the original NES version of the game, but it seems to carry a lot of memories for lots of gamers.  What I did do was watch the animated series everyday.  So when I decided to watch the trailer to see how "remastered" the game looked and started to hear the original theme song for the show, I instantly fell into crazy nostalgia and starting singing along with the song still knowing how it went.  It was a great move to have a sing-a-long with footages of gameplay for the trailer.  It captures the essence of what viewers of the show and players of the game remembers: the vibrant characters and environment, the catchy music, and the platforming.  Unfortunately for me it's set to release on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U thus far and I don't purchase digital games for consoles.  Perhaps there will be a PC/Steam version down the road.  If that should happen, I should look for the original game and play through it so I can have a better feel of comparison like I did with Bionic Commando.  DuckTales Remastered releases Summer of this year 2013.

VGCulture - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Opening

Official Wii U Site: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Source: Youtube Channel CapcomUnityVideos

Look what CapcomUnityVideos released on Youtube today.  Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an Action-RPG that has the capabilities to play with 3 other players locally or online (online play for Wii U only) to fight boss battle after boss battle essentially.  The monsters in the game are enormous and require a lot of patience and coordination to take down.  Players will also be hunting less threatening monsters for food and materials to continue on their quest.  The opening sure is nice.  Sadly, I'm currently busy with two new 3DS games I got and won't be able to get just yet.  For those waiting to start slashing and killing dragons and whatnot, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate releases March 19th, 2013 for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS.

GameLight - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS)

English Wiki: http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Hunter_Wiki
Source: Youtube Channel IGN

I love boss fights in videogames, and Capcom games generally have a lot of awesome boss fights in their games from the original Mega Man games to their more recent games like the Devil May Cry series or Dragon's Dogma.  One particular series in Japan revolves around big boss battles and has since became a huge hit.  But over here in the West, the name "Monster Hunter" doesn't hold much weight and is viewed as a niche game among the community.  Despite not having a strong following in the West, Capcom has continued bringing the Monster Hunter series over and this time it will release on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS.

The Demo for Monster Hunter 3 for the 3DS had released and so I quickly downloaded it yesterday to get a taste of it.  I have played a bit of the Monster Hunter series in the past for the Sony PSP and know that I enjoy the game, but I didn't continue playing very long back then as I had many other PSP games I wanted to play on the system and didn't want to spend the time on what could've been 100+ hours slaying giant dragons and beasts.  I now have the opposite problem where the Nintendo 3DS is lacking in games I want to play and want something with high replay value.  So I was pretty excited to hear that Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was being brought over to the West.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a sort of Action-RPG that isn't quite straight-forward and story driven.  The player goes out into the field and hunts beasts for food, gather materials for crafting, and fight large monsters per request as quests.  In doing so, the player gradually becomes stronger with better equipment.  The main draw of the game is multiplayer where several players band together to fight a giant boss together.  In the 3DS demo, players can choose 1 of 2 scenarios to take on which requires the player to take down a boss under 20 minutes.  I was given the choice to pick a weapon out of 12 different types to take on the boss.  The demo is very tricky for those who have never played a Monster Hunter game as it doesn't explain the mechanics of the game or controls and thrusts the player into the field.  Using a bow was really tough in terms of aiming and I imagine having the 2nd analog stick attachment would make it infinitely better; however, the lock-on ability made controlling the camera a bit more tolerable.  Instead of an over-the-top hack-n-slash and ultra slick combat mechanics found in games like Devil May Cry, the Monster Hunter series has the characters move in a sort of rigid way that is more realistic.  In this manner, all attacks, actions, and item usage is planned out, strategic, and meaningful.  It is impossible to mash buttons and hope to win, and I suppose that's what makes the multiplayer formula work so well with the game as party members rely on each other to succeed in a quest.  The boss fights are incredibly tough but very exciting.  20 minutes may seem like a lot of time to fight one boss, but it doesn't seem so after all the fighting, surviving, and preparation.  Judging from my experience on the PSP version of Monster Hunter, the demo for the 3DS is showing a minuscule amount of content that is truly offered in the game.  Personally, I don't think it's an easy game to get into for most gamers, but those that can grasp the concept of the game and find interest in it is rewarded with a gratifying experience.  The biggest problem I find in the Nintendo 3DS version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate right now is the lack of Online multiplayer.  There's a local multiplayer mode, but I rarely ever see anyone with a 3DS around the people I know and I doubt they'll get the game if they do have one.  This falls into Capcom's seemingly big scheme: the Nintendo Wii U has online multiplayer and can share save data with the 3DS, but you have to buy both individually.  Cross-play support is a growing trend that's showing up often in Sony's systems where a player can buy a PS3 version of a game and get a free download for the PS Vita to play and share save data between the PS3.  That's a neat idea.  But it seems Capcom or Nintendo (I don't know who it goes through to make cross play possible) wants players to pay for both versions which equals $100.  This puts me in a difficult situation.  I want to play the game, but I also want to play online.  I don't have a Nintendo Wii U so I have to get the 3DS version if I want to play it at all.  If only the 3DS had online play, it'd be just perfect.  In any case, fans of the series should really check out the demo for both 3DS or Wii U depending on which ones they have if at all while those new to the series should check up on some guides online to know a little about the game.  In fact, I'll write out the controls right here for a head start:

Circle Pad: Move Character
Digital Pad: Pan Camera

Weapon Sheathed
Y: Use Item
X: Draw/Ready Weapon
A: Interact/Action Key
B: Crouch (While Standing) / Tumble (While moving)

L: Reset Camera Forward (Tap) / Bring up belt menu (Hold)
R: Run (Hold)

Weapon Drawn
Y: Sheath Weapon
X: Regular Attack
A: Alternate Attack
B: Back Step (While Standing) / Tumble (While moving)

L: Reset Camera Forward (Tap) / Bring up belt menu (Hold)
R: Alternate Attack 2

For Bows, Press X and A at the same time to coat your Arrows in substances

Good luck, Have fun, and check the game out to see if it's for you.

NewNews - PC Players Get SFxT DLC Characters

Official Site: http://www.streetfighter.com/us/sfxtk
Steam Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/7178/
Source: Youtube Channel CommunityGame

I bought Street Fighter x Tekken on Steam about 2 months ago thinking that I  would never get to see the 12 additional characters on it not to mention the PS3 exclusive characters.  To my surprise, I saw a special deal on Steam today that just happened to be just that.  The 12 DLC characters that has long since been out for consoles and PS Vita has finally made it out on PC without any warning from the media as far as I know.  To make this even better, the DLC pack is 75% off for only $5 from now until February 20th.  There probably aren't a lot of players for PC, but I had bought the game mainly to play single-player and to play locally with friends so the deal I got for the game and the DLC characters is still cheaper than paying for the original game on console.  I just have to deal with Games for Windows Live.  As for the additional Characters, here's the roster:

Street Fighter:
Sakura
Blanka
Guy
Cody
Elena
Dudley

Tekken:
Lars
Alisa
JACK-X
Bryan
Christie
Lei

I haven't touched Street Fighter x Tekken for a month now.  I think this is a good time to play it again.

GameLight - Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen

Official Site: http://www.dragonsdogma.com/
Source: Youtube Channel machinima

I haven't beaten Dragon's Dogma yet, but I liked what I had played thus far.  So when I heard about Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen, I was kind of excited but also skeptical at the same time.  Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen isn't a sequel or a new game set apart from the original.  It is the complete package of the game; it's a "Game of the Year" Edition if you will.  It's the original game with extended content, yet it isn't an expansion or new game.  You can call it "Super Dragon's Dogma" if you want.  In any case, this is Capcom we're talking about and shouldn't be too surprised.  This is essentially the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds.  With that said, I have to question exactly how much more was added to the game before I decide to be excited and go out to buy a copy.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen is a single-player with online-driven mechanics, open world, Action-RPG, where players can make partners known as "pawns" and share them with the rest of the world for others to recruit into their party to fight.  A player can change their class at will to provide a variety of ways to play, grab onto large enemies to attack vital spots, and fulfill quests in any order they wish.  The original game is quite challenging and has a lot to do.  There has been a substantial amount of DLCs for the game, but I didn't look up any of them.  So this extended version of the game might have all the DLCs and more.  Not knowing how much is actually added to the game, I can't be certain whether purchasing it will be worth it or not.  For those who don't even have the original, I suggest trying out the demo and see if it's of any interest as the game was incredibly fun to some and just down right horrible for others.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen releases in North America and Europe on April 23, 2013 and April 26, 2013 respectively on PS3 and Xbox 360.

NewNews - Project x Zone coming to North America

Official Japanese Site: http://pxz.channel.or.jp/
Source: Youtube Channel IGNentertainment

After months of hearing "Japan exclusive" and "no plans of Western release" we finally get an announcement from Namco Bandai yesterday that they are, in fact, bringing Project x Zone to North America.  This made me so happy and excited I wanted to burst into tears but held it in so I could finish reading the rest of the details.  The estimated release date at the moment is summer of this year 2013.  I hope that means the first day of summer in June so we don't have to wait too long.  Seriously, there weren't that many games to really look forward to this year.  But then games like Pandora's Tower and now Project x Zone gets the okay to bring over to America suddenly changes my perspective on the games coming out this year!  For those unfamiliar with the game, Project x Zone is a Strategy-RPG with grid based movements like a Tactics game and 2D-combo based Action combat featuring over 200 characters across 29 different games from Capcom, Namco Bandai, and Sega.  This is one game I'm willing to pay full price on the first day to get.  This seems like a better year for Japanese developed games with titles like Phantasy Star Online 2, Bayonetta 2, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Dark Souls 2, Final Fantasy XIII - Lightning Returns, Pandora's Tower and this game coming out this year.

GameLight - Street Fighter x Mega Man

Official Site: http://capcom-unity.com/mega_man Source: Youtube Channel CapcomUnityVideos

So it's Mega Man's 25th Anniversary and Capcom didn't have anything planned; however, they still had something available for the faithful fans of Mega Man.  A fan made game called Street Fighter x Megaman was in the making by an individual along with a music composer who re-created familiar Street Fighter themes into 8-bit goodness and caught the attention of Capcom.  This led to an official publication of the game with Capcom backing up the developer in pushing out the game to the masses.  For us Mega Man fans and gamers, we get a free download of the completed game as a celebration of 25 years of the blue bomber.  From what I heard, there isn't a save function, so be sure to free up some time before attempting to take on this game.  Happy 25th year anniversary Mega Man, we hope to still see great games come out in your name.

VGCulture - Version Dilemma

Street Fighter X Tekken is on sale today at Steam (PC) for $12.49.  I have waited all year long, not only for a discount, but also for the 12 new characters that were semi-on the disc but not available.  They're available now, but only for PS3 and Xbox 360 for $20 or you can get the PS Vita version and have all the characters for the full price game of $40.
Source: Youtube Channel CapcomEuro

There are so many factors that change the same game on different systems nowadays, and the game industry just plays into it to find the best possible way to get more than the average price that fans/customers pay for.  I'm now having that dilemma at the moment with Street Fighter x Tekken.  It's not with just PC vs. Consoles, but with every other factor too.  For some games, if you pre-order from Amazon, maybe you'll get a free map.  But if you pre-order from GameStop, you'll receive a neat weapon exclusively from them.  Here are some of the factors for me in Street Fighter x Tekken:

Playstation 3
+ $20 for the game + $20 for the 12 extra characters completing the roster
+ Able to play on a big screen TV
+ Playing on a PS3, I assume it's more reliable with more patch support
+ Mega Man, Cole MacGrath, Pac-Man, Toro, and Kuro exclusively for PS3
+ Universal Fightstick controller compatibility
+ Playing comfortably with friends locally (4-players)

- A big insult to fans who supported the game buying at $60 with on-disc DLCs
- Rarely do the DLCs have any sales or discounts
- Making sure you have enough Hard Drive space, a problem for early PS3s
- DLCs cost nearly $70 altogether (About ~$67.56)

Xbox 360
+ $40 altogether like the PS3 excluding exclusive PS3 characters
+ Able to play on a big screen TV
+ Fightsticks work universal between PS3, Xbox 360 and PC
+ Able to play comfortably with friends locally (4-players)

- No exclusive characters
- Must pay Xbox Live in order to play online
- DLCs are still expensive
- Hard Drive space is still a problem if it's an early version Xbox 360
- Even with the 12 new characters, still not as much as the PS3s version

Playstation Vita
+ $40 for the definitive version of the game, no DLC purchases necessary
+ Portable, can be played anywhere you go
+ Can still play online through local, wi-fi, or 3G network
+ If you already own the PS3 version, the 12 extra characters is added to PS3
+ Cross-compatibility, what you do on PS Vita will save to your PS3

- Buying the game twice to get everything, sounds familiar...
- If you only bought this version, you can't play on a large screen
- Can't play with a friend locally unless they have a PS Vita with the game as well
- Cannot be played with a fight-stick, but has easy swipe controls?

PC
+ On steam right now, it's on sale with 75% for $12.49
+ Even the DLC packs are on sale
+ Steam's recently released Big Picture mode allows easier TV play
+ Can still be played with a fight stick
+ Easier to bring around if it's a laptop compared to a console/TV combo

- Must log into Games for Windows Live, which I hate
- Does not include the 12 extra characters, they can't be bought
- Not everyone has gamepads on PC to play 4-player local
- Higher chance of crashes, bugs, and incompatibility such as slow downs
- Unless you hook up to a large monitor or TV, local multiplayer will feel cramped
- Unlike all other versions, you must be online to play even single-player
- Probably little to no players online

As you can see, all versions have their perks and severe disadvantage.  The Playstation 3 doesn't get discounts for DLCs, Xbox 360 doesn't get any of the exclusive characters available on PS3, PS Vita can't do many of the things the other 3 versions can (play locally with friends on the same system, use a fightstick, play on a big-screen), and PC version doesn't get to even buy the DLC characters as well as having to stay logged into Games for Windows Live.  The version to get just depends on the player.  PS3 players could get the game and the 12 characters as DLCs for $40 or get the PS Vita version along with it for a total of $60 for cross compatibility.  If the Xbox 360 player doesn't mind not having the exclusive characters, they can just get the game and DLC characters for $40.  The PS Vita player could choose to only get their version as it is the definitive version if they plan to play solo and online exclusively for $40.  Then there's the PC version, which clearly has a ton of disadvantages, where it's really cheap for the core game with some of the features that a console has.  In any case, it seems no one wins other than Capcom themselves.  Despite all the uproar Capcom has stirred up in the past few years (if not from the beginning with having 3-5 different versions of Street Fighter 2), they have provided quite a bit of quality games.  I'm probably going to get the Steam/PC version.  I swear I'll go crazy if they suddenly announce "Super Street Fighter x Tekken definitive version" for PS3.  I think I've only bought the same game twice before: Dead Island because my friend wanted to play on PS3 while PC was moddable and had a crazy sale and BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend for PS3 with the original already at hand and BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2 for 3DS just so I can play it on the go.  But I'd like that to happen rarely if not "never" as I don't like to re-purchase the same games.

GameLight Review - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Official Site: http://www.marvelvscapcom3.com/us
Source: Youtube Channel Acrofan

Developer: Capcom, Eighting
Publisher: Capcom
Platforms: [Playstation 3], Xbox 360 / PS Vita
Release Date: November 15, 2011 / February 15, 2012
Genre: Fighting

Pros:
+ A massive roster of 48 characters + 2 DLC characters
+ 12 new characters from the original MvC 3
+ Heroes and Heralds mode changes up the game a bit
+ Heroes and Heralds mode has over 100 cards to collect to use in battle
+ Character balances have been made
+ You can play Galactus in one of the modes
+ It's better released as a standalone rather than a bunch of DLCs

Cons:
- No new levels, only new characters
- No new endings like Super Street Fighter IV had for Street Fighter IV
- Was released in the same year as the original
- The 2 DLC characters are still locked and must be bought
- Doesn't carry anything over from the original game

Recommended: Absolutely, this is what Marvel vs. Capcom 3 should've been like when it first launched.

I was disgusted when I heard that "Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3" was coming out when I had bought the original just a few months prior to its announcement.  What eventually won me over was the announcement of Phoenix Wright being added to the roster.  Some character balances were made to the game, but other than the 12 extra characters and new mode, there isn't anything else added that makes it that different from the original.  Putting that aside, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the definitive version of the game and offers much to the casual and hardcore fighting game fan.  The free DLC Heroes and Heralds mode allows both single-player and online multiplayer options for a unique take on the game where cards can be collected and give different advantages to the player.  The game is very fast-paced and incredibly enjoyable with all sorts of team compositions the player can put together.  There might not be as much single-player content as other fighting games, but there is much to offer when playing against a friend.

Aesthetics

Art Style: 3D graphics played like a 2D fighter
+ Despite being 3D, animations are still fast and fluid
+ Great conversion from 2D to 3D on a lot of the new characters
+ The animations and effects relative to the cards in HaH are really cool
+ Still easy to distinguish things on screen despite things flying everywhere
+ A clean, sleek, and comprehensible user-interface
+ Music for the new characters are great
Aesthetics: 10/10

Buttons
Controller: PS3 controller or Fightstick
+ The new characters still have the basic moves so it's easy to pick up
+ Some characters play and control style is very different offering variety
+ Controls are tight, fast, and responsive
+ If played using a PS Vita, shortcuts can be used
+ Much like other 2D fighting games, there's a challenge mode to teach combos
Buttons: 10/10

Concept & Content
Core Concept: Reduce the life bar down to zero on all 3 opponents each match
+ Arcade mode has new endings for the new characters
+ 12 additional characters have been added to the roster totaling 48 characters
+ Heroes and Heralds mode was added
+ Certain characters offer a very different play style from most
+ In addition to team combinations, HaH mode offers different ability combos too

- No new levels corresponding to the new character
- Original characters have no new endings
- The 2 DLC characters are still locked and must be paid as DLCs
- Information from the original game doesn't carry over
Concept and Content: 6/10

Duration
+ The 12 new characters offers new endings in Arcade mode
+ There will always be 7 stages in Arcade mode, not too short or long
+ Heroes and Heralds mode is the best single-player option for the game right now
+ Replay value mostly relies on Offline/Online versus mode, but has a lot to offer

- You can't move anything when the game is saving or loading
- Lots of saving and loading in-between menus, especially in HaH mode
- Other than HaH, Arcade, and Challenge, there isn't much to offer for solo play
Duration: 6/10

Fun
+ I was really happy with the new characters, especially Phoenix Wright
+ Heroes and Heralds is a fun concept with replay value
+ The 12 additional character definitely offers more variety in team composition
+ I like the new and arranged songs for the new characters

- I'm still not very happy about spending $100 all on the same year for the game
- Nothing carried over from what I did in the original in terms of save files
Fun: 7/10

Overall
There is no doubt that Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is a fun game and a solid fighter, but as an expansion it did a lot to hurt those who bought the original earlier in the year.  Had I known (and for many others) that an  Ultimate version was going to come out, I wouldn't have bought the original at all and waited just a little longer.  Because of this incident, it has prevented many fans of Capcom to with hold their decision to get Street Fighter x Tekken in anticipation for a more definitive version as Capcom had announced prior to its release that there were still 10 characters on its way.  For those who didn't buy the original MvC3, UMvC3 is a great fighter to play with friends over or to play against others online.  It doesn't offer that much in terms of solo play, but versus can be a lot of fun with other people because of the many combinations that can be created.  In the end, I would definitely still recommend this game to any fighting game fan.  Overall: 7.8/10

NewNews - Cherry Tree High Comedy Club finally out on Steam!

Official site: http://cherrytreehigh.com/
Steam Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214610/

Finally, Cherry Tree High Comedy Club is available on Steam after 7 months from its official release!  I first mentioned this game back in April and have mentioned it again on several different posts relating to Nyu Media and the games they're translating.  Cherry Tree High Comedy Club is a sort of Visual Novel/Adventure that requires reading and making decisions.  It's meant to be light-hearted and have lasting appeal with an endless mode after you've complete the main part of the game (or so I hear).  As excited as I am for this game, I'm going to wait just a little longer as a possible fall sale might be coming up as well as the annual winter sale considering I have a large back log to keep me busy anyways.  Chery Tree High Comedy Club is out now for $7.99!

From the developers of Ether Vapor Remaster comes an 2.5 Action game.  From what I can see, Fairy Bloom Freesia boasts itself as a beat-em-up sort of Action game with crazy combos and abilities to chain together.  There's also a leveling system in which the player will gain more abilities and types of attacks as they defeat more enemies.  The game is now available on Desura, Steam, and Nyumedia's page for $7.99.  When is Nyumedia going to bring Cherry Tree High: Comedy Club to Steam...

GameLight - Project X Zone

Official Japanese Site: http://pxz.channel.or.jp/

Seven years ago, a game called Namco x Capcom for the Playstation 2 was released that featured a bunch of characters from a lot of games; however, the game was never released in North America.  Looks like that game has a continuation on the Nintendo 3DS with one of the largest collaborations seen in the industry (other than Super Smash Bros. Brawl).  Project X Zone is a Action-Tactics game exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS that will feature over 200 characters across 29 different games.  Characters from fighting games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua Fighter to Action games like Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Resident Evil to RPGs such as the Tales series, .Hack Sign, and Resonance of Fate will be joining the large cast to do some crazy combo attacks.  I'm not exactly sure what the game's about, but just looking at the gameplay has me immensely excited for this game.  The game is set to launch in Japan on October 11, 2012 exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.  I really hope North America will get to see this game sometime in the near future.

VGCulture - Ace Attorney 5 on its way?

For a while, announcements of Gyakuten Saiban 5's (Ace Attorney in the West) release has circulated throughout the internet with little to no detail of which character it will follow or when it will come out.  What has been found out is that the game will be brought to the West.  To be a bit more specific, there's an English version coming out, but a U.S. release isn't certain.  What also has been shown are some key mechanics to the next Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice game.  The 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS will possibly allow free-camera look, and investigating items in 3D.  This is quite a tease for the U.S. fans of the series as the last Ace Attorney game that released in the U.S. was 2 years ago with Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth as the 2nd game in that spin-off never came to the West.  It'll be even more exciting if it's an actual "Phoenix Wright" game and not "Apollo Justice" or "Miles Edgeworth" game as the last game that focused on the original protagonist was developed and launched back in 2004 with Trials and Tribulations for the GBA (which was released in the U.S. in 2007 for the DS).  Also, no confirmation has been made for bringing the crossover of Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton game either.  Capcom, why do you tease us so?
