NewNews - Hiroshi Yamauchi Passes Away at 85

Hiroshi Yamauchi ran Nintendo as its president from 1949 to 2002 and contributed to the revival of Videogames when the industry was at its lowest point.  In other words, he helped save the Videogame industry with the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom in Japan).  He was a business man at heart and so he may not have been directly responsible for all the games and memories we had of playing them, but it's undeniable that he was a driving force towards the industry's influence in the world.  After Satoru Iwata succeeded Yamauchi's position within Nintendo, Yamauchi stayed with the company as an adviser.  It's been reported throughout the three decades of Nintendo's existence, since it became a videogame company, that Yamauchi was a hard man to work with and that he was a force to be reckoned with.  He always sought out change and innovation and was rather adamant on his decisions, be they good ones or not.  But because of that, Nintendo continues today to innovate and deliver new entertainment.  Despite that, Nintendo has been viewed as being stubborn on change throughout the years as the game industry becomes more involved in online and social aspects.  Yamauchi's influence in Nintendo hasn't been prevalent ever since stepping down as president in 2002.  And now that he has passed, it is entirely up to the new generation to shape, adapt, and change to keep Nintendo relevant in the industry.  The sales of Nintendo's newest Wii U console hasn't been doing the best it could have done, but things could change.  Despite the N64 having a lot of great and memorable games on it, it actually sold pretty poorly and it was the Gameboy and Pokémon that saved Nintendo during those times.  The Virtual Boy was a complete failure.  The Gamecube also have a difficult life-span.  But despite all those hard times, the Nintendo Wii was a revolutionary hit and had changed the game industry in terms of their target audience.  Many would argue that it had ruined Nintendo's reputation within the community, but change and risks must be taken if any sort of innovation is to be made.  Yamauchi made many decisions for change and took lots of risks, some of which were pretty bad.  But Nintendo probably wouldn't be where it is today as one of the most influential, if not THE most influential, company within the Videogame industry were it not for those decisions.  Hiroshi Yamauchi certainly made his mark in the industry and world and his legacy will continue in the name of Nintendo.  R.I.P. Hiroshi Yamauchi, thank you for your contributions.

Yamauchi passed away earlier this morning after a battle with pneumonia. He was 85. -Kotaku

VGCulture - Nintendo 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro

Buy it here: Nintendo 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro

Good news: You can buy a Circle Pad Pro for your 3DS XL for $20 rather than trying to import it for $30-$40 from Japan.  Bad new: It's only available on their store.  I'm hoping that it'll become available on Amazon or some other online store.  It's kind of strange that they wouldn't offer it in retail stores like they did for the original Circle Pad Pro, but I suppose it's because not many people are going to buy it.  With a limited amount of games actually utilizing the attachment, there isn't that big of an incentive for gamers to get it.  I'll probably consider getting one when I finally decide to buy Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

Games compatible with the Circle Pad Pro:
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Nano Assault EX
Resident Evil: Revelations

NewNews - Good News for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Official Site: http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct/archive/04-17-2013/
Source: Youtube Channel Nintendo

What is it exactly that the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U needs?  More games!  Nintendo, along with some other companies, have revealed more games for the 3DS and Wii U in development.

3DS:
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - August 11th
Mario Golf: World Tour - Summer 2013
Mario Party - Winter 2013-2014?
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D - May 24th
New Yoshi's Island Game - ???
Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move - May 9th
Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins - April 21st
Animal Crossing New Leaf - June 9th
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy - 2014 (THEY'RE REALLY BRINGING IT OVER!)
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy - ???
The Starship Damrey - ???
Bugs vs. Tanks - ???
Attack of the Friday Monsters: A Tokyo Tale - ???
Shin Megami Tensei IV - July 16th
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2? - Winter/Holidays 2013

Wii U:
New Super Luigi U - Summer 2013
Virtual Console - Next Week
Game and Wario - June 23

Although the Wii U is lacking in new releases, it's really good to hear all these new games being developed for the Nintendo 3DS.  I was most shocked about having Bravely Default being brought over to NA and the New Legend of Zelda game.  This year looks really good for the Nintendo 3DS.

Retroview - 007 Nightfire

Source: Youtube Channel MORPHEUSCATANA1

It's been a while since I've played my Gamecube and I still have uncompleted games on it so I still have a reason for playing it.  I bought 007 Nightfire a little over 10 years ago and never completed because I got stuck on one of the levels.  In the past year, each time I wanted to take a break from recent games I go back and play a level.  For some reason, the game felt significantly easier for me to complete in terms of difficulty.  In terms of patience, it was difficult to sit and play through.  I finally played the last 2 levels last night and completed.  Did I really become that much more experienced in First-Person Shooters?  Perhaps I did considering the amount of FPS games I played throughout college and beyond.  I looked back at the previous levels of the games and even though I played them over a decade ago, I remember them and the events that took place.  Sure, no 007 games seem as great and memorable as 007 Goldeneye, but I think even Nightfire had its moments.  What I really miss about playing Nightfire is playing multiplayer with friends.  I think I miss doing that in most games as less games have local multiplayer and very few of my friends have interest in playing games that have them (ex: Call of Duty series).  That seems to be what put 007 games above the others early 2000.  But as online multiplayer games got more popular as well as the rise of Call of Duty, the 007 franchise just couldn't hold the interest of players anymore.  007 games ares still being made, but I rarely hear anything good about any of them.  The latest 007 games I got is 007 Goldeneye for the Nintendo Wii, and it's a recreation of the original with some modern twists such as using Daniel Craig's likeness rather than Pierce Brosnan's.  The game feels more like Call of Duty than classic 007 games, but maybe that's okay.  It felt good finishing Nightfire because I left it uncompleted for so long, but I don't think it's a game I can really enjoy anymore.  Sure there's nostalgia there, but I think I'd only be able to enjoy playing multiplayer with friends which I doubt will happen anytime soon as my friends can't handle playing with such outdated graphics.  007 movies still do fairly well such as the most recent one "Skyfall" which won an Oscar for best song for a film of 2012, but I think the popularity it had on gaming is long gone.

NewNews - Nintendo Wii U ZombiU Bundle out Feb. 17

Wii U Page: http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu/features/
Source: Youtube Channel IGN

Looks like there will be a special bundle on its way for the Nintendo Wii U that includes many things that will prepare players for upcoming releases.  Aside from the Deluxe version of the main console that holds 32 GB worth of memory and the Wii U Pad, the bundle will include a Pro Controller, a copy of ZombiU, a free download of NintendoLand and an exclusive art book for ZombiU for $389.99.

To list them:
-Wii U Console
-Wii U Pad
-Pro Controller
-ZombiU Game
-ZombiU Art Book
-Free NintendoLand download

That's the console, 2 games to play, a pro controller for all other games that might need them, and a special bonus art book.  It's $40 more expensive than just the Deluxe Set by itself, but $70 cheaper than buying the Deluxe set, Pro Controller, and ZombiU game together, saving enough money for another purchase of a game.  The Bundle is set to release on February 17th.  I wonder how long this bundle will stick around?  It's definitely a consideration for me should I decide to buy a Nintendo Wii U.  Thanks for sharing the news Joystiq!

NewNews - New Xeno Game

Source: Youtube Channel Games

This year just keeps looking better and better!  I keep seeing posts about a Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem collaboration, a Wind Waker remake, and other such announcements my friends posted up on facebook so I decided to look up some videos to check them out.  What really caught my attention was a game marked as "X" at the end of the trailer which looks a lot like Xenoblade Chronicles.  It looks so beautiful on such a grand scale.  If Nintendo keeps up with the amount of support that they have now, they'll have no problem in the new generation of consoles.  At the moment, there isn't much information about the new Xeno game, but I'm already convinced into getting it just by looking at this one minute trailer.

NewNews - North America gets Pandora's Tower

Official Site: http://www.xseedgames.com/
Source: Youtube Channel GameNewsOfficial

It was great news to hear Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story getting a release in North America, but many were still wondering if the last of the 3 petitioned games would see the light of day in the Western Market.  Let us thank the dedicated members of XSeed games for once again bringing another great title to North America.  In this dark and gritty Action-RPG, the protagonist must bring back the flesh of slain beasts to rid the curse of the girl "Elena" who is slowly turning into a beast herself.  An exact release date hasn't been announced, but the game is set to launch in spring of this year 2013.  This will possibly be the last real Wii game worth buying as all attention and work has been turned to the Nintendo Wii U, so keep an eye out for this game.

NewNews - Big Releases of November 2012

The next three weeks are going to be pretty big for some gamers.
Source: Youtube Channel HaloWaypoint

Halo 4 had launched last night exclusively for the Xbox 360 and begins a new trilogy for the series.  The original trilogy was a lot of fun but I'm sad to have not been able to play ODST or Reach.  I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to play Halo 4, but so far it looks great.
Source: Youtube Channel CALLOFDUTY

I was disappointed with Black Ops when it was released 2 years ago.  It had a great story for single-player, but the game play was really boring.  Multiplayer was fun because it was possible to have a buddy join you in online multiplayer on the same system and same screen (for consoles), but it was still unbalanced, buggy, and suffered from irregular amounts of lag.  Perhaps Black Ops 2 will be a lot better.  I had my doubts for Modern Warfare 3 last year, but it ended up pleasing me quite a bit.  I'm not certain how high the demand for Call of Duty is anymore, but I suppose we'll all find out next week.
Source: Youtube Channel Nintendo

Two weeks from now, Nintendo's newest creation will hit the public and we'll see whether Nintendo still has any attraction to the gaming community or the casual gamers.  Nintendo has already captured my attention for the system with games such as Bayonetta 2, Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper, and ZombiU as well as multiplatform games such as Assassin's Creed 3, Darksiders 2, and Mass Effect 3.

The holidays are approaching quickly which means huge sales on its way.  Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas sales are among the huge deals.

VGCulture - Nintendo Wii U Sighted!

Official Site: http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu
Source: Youtube Channel gamespot

I was at Target yesterday to check out the buy 2 get 1 free sale and saw a demo display of the Nintendo Wii U in the electronics section.  Sadly, there weren't any demo games to try out, but it at least showed what the controller looked like and had demo videos of some of the games that's going to release alongside the launch.  It feels a bit awkward which is probably why Nintendo decided to create a dedicated hardcore gamer controller for certain games.  I can see the gamepad controller coming into play for a lot of other games though.  The gamepad's actually really light, so the player wouldn't get tired that easily from holding it.  But the ergonomic is a bit odd.  For me, I guess I'm just not used to the controller yet, but at least it's not entirely uncomfortable.  Those with smaller hands like children or those with much larger hands of adults maybe have difficulty holding the controller comfortably for long durations; however, I imagine Nintendo and other developers to make more use of the touch screen on the gamepad rather than using the keys.  It's hard to tell whether the Nintendo Wii U will take off on launch day.  There's a lot of neat games that have been showcased for the Wii U so far, but there hasn't been a true killer software for it yet.  I just hope developers are more willing to support the system and create more games on it than the lack of support we've seen for the Nintendo 3DS the past year and a half.  The Nintendo Wii U launches on November 18th, 2012 about two weeks from now.

GameLight Review - New Super Mario Bros. 2

Official Site: http://newsupermariobros2.nintendo.com/
Source: Youtube Channel Nintendo

Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: August 19, 2012
Genre: Platformer

Pros:
-Back to the basics and still a lot of fun
-The 3D is really cool for the 2D Mario game
-Addictive focus on collecting coins

Cons:
-This Mario game makes you really greedy (leading to falling into bottomless pits)
-Significantly easier than past Mario games, even its predecessor New SMB1
-The game is pretty short

I wasn't too keen on buying this game outright as I knew I'd be able to finish it fairly quickly.  But I had bought a 3DS XL and had no games on hand and New Super Mario Bros. 2 seemed like the best bet to start off with.  It's a Super Mario Bros. game, so it's pretty obvious what to expect when one is familiar with the series.  The game is a lot of fun, there's tons of secrets hidden throughout the game, and this time around you can play 2-player co-op through the whole game.  One of the major differences in this iteration of Super Mario Bros. is that there is an extreme focus on coin collecting.  The game records an overall collection of coins and is shared universally through Nintendo's data servers and shows up on the official website of how many coins have been collected by players in total.  The game is a lot easier than the first New SMB and is fairly short, but it still provides plenty of entertainment finding secrets, rushing through levels, and furiously collecting coins.  This is one game that could be fun for most gamers of any age or skill level and a definite must for Mario fans.

Aesthetics
The graphic style and quality is essentially the same as the first New Super Mario Bros. 1 released on the DS and is possibly run on the same engine.  The biggest pull that differentiates this one from its predecessor in terms of graphics is the ability to display images in 3D.  The objects don't really jump out of the screen like most people imagine 3D images to do, but it does provide a different form for players to look at and play on.  It definitely accentuates certain objects in the game that are either important, dangerous, or useful while playing.  In terms of audio, I don't think anything has changed at all.  The music is the same main theme used in the first one with a lot of variations throughout the game and the sound effects are a direct port with some additional new ones.  We don't need to discuss story as most gamers already know and accept that story isn't important in a Super Mario Bros. game.  It was still kind of aggravating seeing Mario and Luigi waving off good-bye to Princess Peach only to see her captured once again.  You'd think that they'd have more guards around her considering her history of getting kidnapped.  So despite having a lot of the same assets and materials used in the first game in the second one, they were still able to keep the game fresh, lively, while making the game mechanics work along side the aesthetics.  Aesthetics: 10/10

Buttons
One of the aspects of Super Mario Bros. games I've always loved in the platforming genre is how incredible the controls are.  Although the game only utilizes 2 buttons, the developers make creative uses of them through level design and character ability.  In the newer Super Mario Bros. games, new abilities have been added alongside new power-ups.  Super Mario Bros. have always been a lot of fun with just running, jumping and abilities from the power-ups to fly and throw fire; however, the ability to wall kick jump, triple leap jump and smash down adds in all sorts of different puzzles and challenges for the player to encounter and overcome.  Players who've played through the original Super Mario Bros. 3 game will feel pretty comfortable with the power-ups while those who've played New Super Mario Bros. 1 will know the exact controls and abilities as nothing as changed.  What really makes these abilities shine is actually the level designs, but the controls themselves are really tight which should be true for any platformer.  The controls for Super Mario is the best in its genre and this game proves that it still hold true.  Buttons: 10/10

Concept & Content
So the goal of the game is still the same since its first in the series: Run right to reach to the goal without dying.  Throughout each iteration, little things in-between the start and the goal has changed.  Much like its predecessors, there are power-ups to help the player out, hazards to watch out for, and secrets/rewards to find and collect.  There is a huge emphasis on collecting coins and there are tons of ways of collecting coins with the new gold block head, golden power flower, P buttons and such to bring out a ton of coins.  With this in mind, players also have to fight off greed as a lot of special coins and coin collection events can lead to falling into pits, lava, enemies, and other hazards.  Still, dying isn't much of an issue as the player will collect hundreds of lives along the way.  I honestly don't know why there is a "lives" system in this iteration.  They should've just allowed infinite lives while having a counter of how many times a player died and in what form (enemy, bottomless pit, time over) instead.  The boss battles is reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World as Bowser's children return.  The game overall felt really easy which made me question why it was so fun.  I guess it felt easy because I didn't have to worry about a Game Over for all the lives I gained and it was still fun because there were still challenges throughout the entire game that rewards the player little by little.  Besides the main worlds, there are the alternative worlds and a special world.  When you complete a world, levels from that world are unlocked in Coin Rush.  Coin Rush is a special mode where the player has to collect as many coins as possible without dying in a short amount of  time through three randomly selected levels.  Coin Rush is the main mode to keep the replay value of this game high.  The player can also play co-op campaign with another 3DS owner with their own cartridge simultaneously, much like the Wii version of Super Mario Bros.  I'm a bit disappointed that the 2-player competitive mode from the first New SMB didn't make a return with even more levels as it was an incredibly fun mode.  Just recently, Nintendo has announced 3 DLC packs that adds more challenges in Coin Rush mode (3 extra levels each from what I understand).  It bothers me knowing that even Super Mario Bros. has DLCs now, but the game provides the full package with the DLCs being additional replay value.  The DLCs are $2.49 each and can be bought through the eShop.  The game stayed true to the classic Mario games with its own twists, though it'd be nice to see some additional modes or the return of competitive multiplayer requiring only 1 cartridge to further extend the replayed value for a launch cost of $40 for the game.  Concept and Content: 9/10

Duration
Even though the main game was somewhat short, I was pretty satisfied when I completed everything (other than grabbing all the special coins).  The pacing was fairly quick and I never got bored in-between.  There were parts in the game where I kept dying because I kept getting greedy and I realized if you die 5 times or more, you get the special invincibility leaf.  It's pretty much telling you "you're sucking too hard, take this."  I've played roughly 10 hours of the game rushing to the very end, then replaying the levels to grab the special coins, unlocking the alternate worlds, and completing the secret world.  I suppose Coin Rush could provide some replay value for me, but I'm practically done with the game and don't really plan to play it all too often anytime soon.  Duration: 9/10

Fun
I immediately fell back in love with Super Mario Bros. when I started up the game and felt all the tingling sensations back in my thumbs as I breezed through the game.  The game is significantly easier than the first one, but I really didn't mind.  I laughed at how much lives I accumulated throughout my first play through rushing to the end of the game in which I ended up with 256 lives.  The focus on coin collecting was a bit distracting at first, but I eventually got used to it and either embraced it in certain levels or completely ignored it if it was causing me to die one too many times from being greedy.  I felt pretty good after completing the game in its entirety (though I didn't 100% on the special coins), but did feel a bit bad about spending $40 on 10 hours of playing.  All in all, it was a really enjoyable Mario game and a big sigh of relief knowing that I can still enjoy platformers.  Fun: 10/10

Overall
$40 is a bit pricey for the amount of time I spent on the game, but the quality is definitely there.  I would probably still buy the game if I had to choose all over again whether to get the game as my first 3DS game or not.  It doesn't try too hard to be different or ground-breaking while still being able to deliver a different experience that players have had in the previous Mario games.  Any fan of platforming and definitely fans of Mario should play through New Super Mario Bros. 2 at one point.  Whether the $40 is worth it depends on whether an individual is okay with the one playthrough or if they can make the purchase worth it through excessive play of coin rush (I know some people out there are doing it if we have over 165 billion coins collected in total).  Overall: 9.6/10

VGCulture - Centipede Infestation Music

Nintendo Page - Centipede: Infestation
Atari Page - Centipede: Infestation
Source: Youtube Channel atari

After completing all the levels possible in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS, I was left with no games to play on my new portable system.  I have purchased 4 games online and am patiently waiting for them to arrive in the mail.  So this past weekend, I decided to buy a game for a cheap price to hold me over until my games come in.  I decided to buy Centipede: Infestation as the classic game was one I liked playing at the arcades and it looked like an interesting arena shooter.  I have heard little about the game and comments about the game were mostly negative.  Still, I gave it a try and played it this weekend.  The art style for the story is cartoonish, which is fine by me; however, the in-game graphics were muddy, uninteresting, and frustrating.  The 3D really worked at some points where some of the flying enemies really felt like they popped out of the screen.  The voice acting is pretty bad in that it didn't match the reactions shown in the images.  The gameplay is drawn out and mostly boring with some special cases where some levels and boss battles were genuinely challenging and fair.  Still, I didn't have much hope for the game.  After playing up to a certain level, I started to notice the music.  It sounded like dubstep, yet it had some other elements within it that made it sound unique.  After a few more levels, I decided to plug in my 3DS XL to a plugged in speaker and plug in my nice headphones to get the music as loud and powerful as possible.  What I heard blew my mind.

The music isn't exactly memorable, but it was nice to listen to.  There is a mixture of dubstep, electronica, ethereal trance, and drum 'n bass yet the style sounded so familiar.  I looked it up and sure enough, the music was composed and produced by Jake Kaufman.  Wayforward Technologies have worked with Jake Kaufman in the past and I have heard his work enough to recognize his style a bit.  I have made mention of Mr. Kaufman in the past and I am surprised once more by his work on Centipede: Infestation.  The music is powerful, exciting, and something I can really listen to outside of the game.  I wish I could find some sort of example to share, but the game has been largely ignored by the industry and community alike with only a few gameplay videos and no soundtrack to download from anywhere.  The game doesn't even have a score on Metacritic.  Honestly, the music is too good for the game, but it's currently a redeeming factor that has persuaded me to at least finish the game.  Some of the music can be heard from the gameplay videos, but it doesn't really do it justice as the music is quite low and the sfx are quite loud.  It's a real shame that the music cannot be shared and spread to the gaming community.  It really deserves some attention.

VGCulture - Playing DS games on 3DS XL

Official Site: http://www.nintendo.com/3ds

I've been playing my 3DS XL the past 3 days and have been enjoying the larger screen, better buttons, and awesome 3DS graphics.  Unfortunately, the only game I have is New Super Mario Bros. 2 which cost $40 along with the 3DS XL ($199) and I completed the game within 24 hours of opening it.  It was fun, and there's still some secrets I haven't found yet, but there isn't much more to do in the game other than mindlessly collect coins and play the coin rush mode to compete for a high score.  So I decided to try out some of my DS games on it since it's backward compatibility.  I tried Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia on my 3DS XL and the first thing I noticed was how clear the audio was.  I was hearing parts of songs I didn't hear before on my DS Lite.  Unfortunately, playing the game kind of gave me a hand cramp because of the way the digital pad is set up and perhaps I'm not used to it.  Also, the larger screen just made it more difficult to keep track of all the enemies that appear, strange enough.  And many players have complained in the original 3DS that the graphics were very blurry and would rather play in the original size which I believe is still possible with the 3DS XL.  Then, I tried out Phantasy Star Zero on it.
Source: Youtube Channel FernandoCitan

I liked my experience of PS0 on the 3DS XL.  The bigger screen helped, and the game wasn't entire sharp graphics to begin with so a little blurriness was actually okay.  What really made the experience awesome was that the analog circle pad was usable in the game.  So the controls felt a bit more comfortable and familiar to playing Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2 on the GameCube.  Having the Start button below the screen instead of below the face buttons was a little odd playing the game, but it's so large that it wasn't too much of a problem to get used to.  I think I'm going to continue playing PS0 on my 3DS XL and I'll play my other DS games on the DS Lite.

Long story short: Certain NDS games work really well with the 3DS XL while others are a disadvantage.  Even though the 3DS XL can play DS in its original size, it doesn't really change the ergonomics of the controls and not all games play well with the circle pad.  So the 3DS XL isn't a total replacement for my DS, but it does have its perks for certain games.

NewNews - Wii U Announcement

Official Site: http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu
Source: Youtube Channel IGNentertainment

In 2011, the amount of Wii games released was minuscule and the ones that did were mostly overlooked other than main stay franchises such as Zelda and Kirby.  It was no surprise that the Wii U was announced and was being pushed forward as Nintendo's next step into the market.  Nintendo has finally announced today that the new Nintendo console will be available on November 18th, 2012 with two versions: Wii U Basic White with 8-GB worth of memory for $299.99 and Wii U Deluxe Black with 32-GB worth of memory for $349.99.  It's a bit pricy, but not unreasonable.

Like with any other console, there needs to be a reason to get them.  Usually, the reason is to play the games available for them.  The one game that caught many gamer's attention at this year's E3 was ZombiU.  It looked dark, gritty, challenging, and a bit more for the core gamer.  What seems to be the case is that Nintendo is welcoming back their hardcore gamers back into the community as they have been largely ignored throughout the lifespan of the Nintendo Wii.  Games such as Batman Arkham City, Assassin's Creed 3, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 have been generally for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and was never available to the Nintendo Wii (with the exception of Call of Duty games having dumbed down ports).  With a traditional controller available, Nintendo hopes to bring back their core gaming community (probably because their casual gamers started to abandon them for mobile and social games).

Right now, two games have been announced for the Wii U that has caught my attention and has me seriously considering buying one.  One of them is Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper.  I was happy to hear that it was brought over to the Western market, but was disappointed when I found out that the PS3 version was digital download only.  There is another chance now that a retail version will be released for the Wii U in the Western market.  That'll be one game I'd really like.  The other being this one:

The first Bayonetta was Console exclusive to PS3 and Xbox 360.  But it seems like Nintendo and Sega has agreed to release a sequel exclusively for the Nintendo Wii U.  That's very sneaky.  But I imagine more great games will release for the Wii U that will make owning the system worth while.  I hope the same is true for the Nintendo 3DS.  I'm happy I own one now, but I'm still lacking games for the system.  That Super Smash Bros. title mentioned earlier in the year would be a great addition to the 3DS.  Here's hoping for a successful launch and fruitful gaming for the Nintendo Wii U!

Release Date: November 18th, 2012
   -Wii U Basic White (8GB) - $299.99
   -Wii U Deluxe Black (32GB) - $349.99

VGCulture - 3DS Comparison and New SMB 2

Official Site: http://www.nintendo.com/3ds
Source: Youtube Channel Nintendo

I bought a Nintendo Nintendo 3DS XL yesterday and decided to have my first game be New Super Mario Bros. 2.  Before I talk a bit about the game, I'll go over a bit of the system itself.  I had waited all this time for a dual analog stick version of the 3DS, but it seems like Nintendo wants to keep their design the same and rather create a new version of the 2nd analog stick for the XL.  Despite the slight disappointment, it was nice to see a larger version of the 3DS.  Let's have a run down on the comparisons:

Pros
-Screen Size: I'm not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure "XL" stands for "Extra Large" which is true.  The screen size is an inch larger than the original.  This has made it significantly easier on the eyes.
-Better for larger hands: This would benefit those who have really large hands as the previous model really made it difficult to adjust to the size without cramping one's hands.
-Return of the rounded shoulder keys: I didn't like the rectangular shoulder buttons that were significantly tinier than past gameboys on the original 3DS.  It didn't feel right.  The XL version feels closer to the shoulder keys of the GBA SP and has a nice rounded shape and a nice clicking feeling to them.
-Sleeker design: More than just aesthetics, the original 3DS had a bit of a lip that did make it easier to open, but felt bulky more than it should.  The XL is evenly cut all the way around and feels very solid.  It's still just as easy to put in your pocket.
-Real Buttons: By that, I mean the Start, Select, and Home keys are actual buttons where the original used the foam pad keys.  The decision to use foam pad keys was a bit confusing as those wear out rather quickly and are known to have problems in a lot of children's toys in the past.  I'm glad they're real buttons now.
-Dynamic Audio: I'm not entirely sure what they did with the audio hardware, but I like it.  Everything is so much clearer and works with true stereo.  It kind of reminds me of my original Gameboy from the "Play it Loud" series.

Cons
-It's heavy: This is the heaviest gameboy I've ever had, nay, the heaviest "handheld" I've ever had.  It's not too much of a problem at first, but I generally lie down to play handhelds.  Usually, I play handhelds at night when I can't sleep and holding the 3DS XL up made me realize just how heavy it was.  Maybe I can turn this into a good thing and build muscles from playing it!
-Hand Cramps: I have a problem with this on almost all handhelds now, so it's not specific to the 3DS XL specifically.  It's cool to finally have an analog stick on a gameboy now, but it has created quite an odd ergonomic predicament for holding the gameboy without getting a hand cramp.  I think it's mainly holding a hand held horizontally now that causes the hand cramp because my NDS and PSP does the same thing to me after a while.  I gotta be careful around the 3DS XL and do some stretches before and after playing.
-Not as portable: For me, it's portable since it fits in my pocket.  For a younger child, or those with smaller bags on them, this unit is too huge to carry around.  It's almost like carrying a brick around, just a little flatter.
-Battery Life: Why isn't this under the Pros?  Because the difference in battery life isn't that significant compared to the original 3DS.  Considering the device needs more juice to run a larger screen, louder audio, wi-fi, stand-by, and such, it's not surprising the battery life runs at 7 hours at most.  I remember burning through AA batteries like crazy back in the Gameboy B&W and GBC days, and then they had a rechargeable battery for the GBA SP which was like the best thing ever, especially since it lasted 10+ hours.  When I got my NDS Lite, it ran for an awesome 20 hours before needing a recharge.  So 7 hours is really sad and disappointing in comparison and the original 3DS ran about 6 hours max, which is not too big of a difference depending on what you play on the 3DS.
-Not for Tiny Hands: The device is most likely made for the older generation who want a larger screen and control space for our larger hands.  The original concept was created from the DSi XL as Brain Age and such games were popular among all ages, even those past their 60's.  So that people didn't need to squint so much or put on heavy reading glasses, Nintendo made a larger device.  Same for this one.  The device is quite large, and so it's not going to be very comfortable for younger children or those with smaller hands.

Although I wrote a lot more for the Cons than the Pros, I have found the 3DS XL to be worth it for most people.  Unless you have tiny hands or want more portability, 3DS XL would be great for anyone looking to play any of the titles for the system.

Now for a short rant on New Super Mario Bros. 2.  I'll start off by saying that it's fun.  I'll also say that it's significantly easier than the first one and any Mario game that came before it.  I just started at World 2 and reach up to 62 Lives already just from running through the levels (I generally rush through a game and then revisit the levels or replay the games to get everything else).  Despite the many iterations of Mario games, Nintendo has managed to keep this game fresh and interesting.  It feeds off the greed for coins and even updates players on how many coins have been collected nationally and internationally (we're past a billion coins already).  It was cool seeing the game change a little by the actions of other players in the world.  It's almost like playing an online game where changes affect everyone and anyone can contribute to it.  All the mushroom huts have been refreshed twice already due to the coin collecting milestones the players have reached.  I probably won't be doing a review until I finish the game though, and I also have a lot of other reviews lined up.  In short, New SMB 2 feels very casual, yet is still a lot of fun.

VGCulture - Filler - Terry Crews Interview

I'm a bit tight on time today, so here's a little filler.  We all know how awesome Terry Crews is, so they decided to interview him:

NewNews - Project Sora Studio disbands

"当社は2012年6月30日をもって解散いたしました。
これまでのご愛顧、誠にありがとうございました。
当ホームページは2012年7月31日をもって閉鎖いたします。

 株式会社プロジェクトソラ"

A little while ago, it was announced that Namco Bandai will be developing the new Smash Bros. in the series.  It was revealed that Project Sora Studios has disbanded and the site will go down by the end of the month.  Aside from working on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, they also developed Kid Icarus Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS.  Now that the projects have been completed, the studio has split and will probably allocated back to other projects across Nintendo.  It'll probably be a good 3-5 years before we'll get to see the New smash and having Namco Bandai develop the game suddenly reveals some potential characters gamers would really like to see in the roster.

NewNews - Bigger 3DS exist

Official Site: http://www.nintendo.com/3ds

Source: Youtube Channel Nintendo

Here's a list of things announced from Nintendo yesterday:
Nintendo 3DS XL - 00:27
Upcoming 3rd-party Games - 02:33
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask - 06:12
Super Smash Bros. - 07:11
Art Academy - 08:13
Kirby's Dream Collection - 08:55
Pikmin 2 - 09:46
New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 10:34 and 14:35
Fire Emblem - 14:08
Nintendo eShop - 15:58
Pokémon Black Version 2 Pokémon White Version 2 - 17:34 and 20:07
Pokémon Dream Radar - 18:35
Pokédex 3D Pro - 19:21

So the rumor of a larger 3DS was very true, even though Nintendo denied it.  Those who waited (like I did) will be disappointed to hear that the 2nd analog pad isn't implemented and will most likely have its own version of the attachment available for this larger version of the 3DS.  the Nintendo 3DS XL will feature a 90% larger screen for both top and bottom (an inch more), a longer battery life, and actual buttons for the start, select, and home keys instead of the squishy membrane keys.  The system is set to launch with a 4GB memory card at $199.99 on August 19th which is the same day New Super Mario Bros. 2 launches.  Japan and Europe gets it a little earlier on July 28th.  The lack of a 2nd analog pad is a bit disappointing and the low battery life is still a problem; however, if Nyko can create a Power Grip Pro for this version of the 3DS I think I might consider picking one up.  I'm glad to see more games that I'm actually interested in coming out for the 3DS now.  Still, it could do better.
