If there were ever a modern-day version of the classic Gauntlet, it'd probably be this game. With the same exact 4 characters as the classic Gauntlet, the player traverses an endless stream of levels that randomly generates while grabbing loot to purchase items and take on quests to get even more items. There's a free demo for PC/MAC that you can try out. Being a fan of Gauntlet, dungeon-crawling and retro graphics, I quickly downloaded the demo and tried it out.
I'll be honest, the game's not very engaging playing on PC/MAC. It's clear that the game was designed for mobile devices and doesn't change its mechanics at all for the PC/MAC. Essentially, you hold down the attack button and just move around and dodge danger as your attacks automatically home-in on the nearest enemy. There are no other buttons or abilities or such other than picking up runes that give you a short duration of power. Also, the game is single-player only which leaves having actual buttons/keys to play and a larger screen the main reasons for playing on PC/MAC. So although I compared this game to Gauntlet, it's missing a lot of aspects that made Gauntlet fun. The game feels very barebones, yet it works really well in terms of a mobile device. Having randomly generated levels keeps the game fresh which seems like an interesting distraction to have on my phone when I'm out and waiting somewhere. I'll probably get this game for my phone, but not for PC.

VGCulture - Filler - Music - Days of Old

Anarchy Reigns (Max Anarchy) had one heck of a soundtrack. I was instantly entranced by it the first time I played the game and heard "Ruthless". As I played more of the game, I heard tracks I liked even more than "Ruthless". Even after completing the campaign, I can't stop listening to the soundtrack. They all have good beats to them, catchy hooks, and some of the best rapping/free-styling I've heard in a while. It can be tough to find videogame music sometimes, but there is an official soundtrack that can be purchased digitally on Amazon for Anarchy Reigns. Next week will be a busy week for all involved in the videogame industry/scene as E3's showing will be held from June 11th-June 13th. So until then, rest up for those attending and have a great weekend to everyone.

GameLight - Rise of the Triad

While checking out yesterday's sale on Steam, I came across this trailer at the bottom of the page. What shocked me was seeing "Apogee Software" appear in the beginning of the video. I thought that company name was long gone, but it seems that they're still around. They're not developing this game, but they are publishing it with development by Interceptor Entertainment. The second thing that shocked me was that it's a twitch-based First-Person Shooter, granted that this is actually a reboot of an existing Apogee Software game. Despite several attempts in the past few years or so to bring back twitch-based first-person shooters, the general gaming community doesn't have much interest in it. First-Person shooters is one of the most popular genres in gaming for the Western market; however, twitch-based shooters such as Quake and Unreal are quite niche now and fans of those two games generally go back to those games rather than the newer ones. The most recent twitch-based FPS I have played are Nexuiz, Quake Live, Painkiller and Renaissance Heroes. Nexuiz is a really pretty and entertaining game, but doesn't have a community behind multiplayer (people make maps for it though). Quake Live has a small community with some maps from older Quakes catering to fans of the old Quake games. I've only played the first one and enjoyed it a bit, but the Painkiller franchise has pretty much become a joke with each iteration being developed by a different company and receiving lower scores with each release. Renaissance Heroes just went live recently and is also on Steam. It's a fun game, but has most of its content locked as paid items and lacks content. So I'm surprised there are still developers willing to go this route and make another twitch-based FPS. Watching the video, the graphics, game mechanics, and controls look amazing and a lot of fun. I got even more excited when I learned that there was a single-player campaign like the original (I never played the original, but I'm so used to seeing games like these with only multiplayer modes). So whatever the outcome might be, I'm pretty interested in the game. I just don't think it will take off, is all. Hopefully I'll be wrong so I can enjoy the multiplayer of the game as well as the Campaign.

NewNews - Defiance Free Weekend on Steam

TV show/game tie-in Defiance has been mentioned and praised by many editorials for being, well, fun. It's an MMORPG played like 3rd-person shooter which makes me think of Tabula Rasa (I wish I had the chance to play that game). Hearing that SyFy channel was involved in this project really worried when it was first announced, but both the show and the game seems to be doing fairly well. The game doesn't have the best scores though. They're not terrible, but they also leave some questions that needs to be answered. It seems that the game itself is fun, but is repetitive and lacks content. The developers explain that they focused on the core gameplay first and will continue to put out more content down the road. I'm not sure what to make of this and I'm sure it's like that for many people on the fence in purchasing the game. So this free weekend will help some of us answer some of those questions and will also be able to get the game for $41.99 this weekend from its usual $59.99.

GameLight - Blade Symphony

So I was surfing through Steam's early access section and saw a trailer for a game called Blade Symphony. Made by the team who modded Half-Life 1 and created Dystopia, this competitive multiplayer provides a variety of swords and styles for players to duel with each other. It boasts itself for being a technical game so that winning would be based on skill and patience rather than button mashing and persistence. Looking at it, it kind of reminds me of Gunz: The Duel. It's $15 on steam's early access right now and can be played upon purchase; however, the game is considered in beta and will continue to change and improve as time goes on. Mega64 have been doing videogame related videos for years now and have gotten into a lot of trouble in public many times before. They get into all sorts of shenanigans around people unaware that they're shooting a video and often times get the police called on them. So when I heard that they did a video based on the violent retro-styled game "Hotline Miami", I was instantly interested and scared at the same time. The video does justice to the game but does get them in trouble...again. For those interested in playing the game, it's available on Steam for $9.99.

Warframe is a free-to-play online cooperative Action 3rd-person shooter in which the player and 3 other players join together in taking on instanced missions. I never heard of the game before today and saw it show up on Steam and immediately downloaded it to try out. In my own way of describing it, the player takes the role of a flipping alien ninja with guns, melee weapons and powers to subdue their enemies while fulfilling missions to escort hostages, destroy cores, and assassinate. For the most part, the combat is a 3rd-person shooter utilizing rifles, pistols, shotguns and such with close combat involving axes, blades, and hammers. The player will acquire abilities to go stealth, deploy decoys, jump higher, and many other abilities. From the one hour I played of it so far, I enjoyed it. The shooting is pretty solid, and melee combat is pretty fluid. It's super easy to group up with other player and there's the choice to play solo too. There's some platforming and keeps the game from being just about running forward. Despite being really entertaining, there are some problems I have with the game.
My biggest gripe with the game is that the controls can't be changed. Melee attack uses the "E" key and I generally like having my melee attacks on my side mouse key. Interacting with objects is the "X" key and I would like to set it to my "F" key which is actually used for switching weapons by default. It's not too big of a problem that it would mar the experience I've had with the game thus far, but it would allow me to change the key mappings to my own comfort. Another problem is item acquisition. Since it's free-to-play, it's not surprising to have a micro-transaction system built in. Some items are exclusively for those who pay real money and can be pretty pricey. Even with in-game credits, the items are still considered really expensive and will take a while to acquire. With that, your gameplay might be the same for quite a while before you can change things up a little. Still, the game is worth checking out and provides a decent amount of entertainment.

I've been hearing about a space flying shooter called Strike Suit Zero for a while and from the footages it reminds me of Zone of the Enders. As nice looking as the game may be, the game is surprisingly an indie game that was made possible by the community contributing to the kickstarter. Supposedly released on January 24th, 2013, the game is out now on Steam and GreenManGaming today a day earlier. Aside from space fighting as a jet, you can transform into a gundam-like mobile suit which I suspect has more flexibility in movement and different attacks. If you buy it now on Steam between now and January 30th, you can get it for 20% off at $15.99 from its base price of $19.99.
