GameLight - Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

I never did pick up Dead or Alive 5 when it released.  I was really happy that it came out for the PS3 and was going to buy it, but I had built up such a large backlog on my PS3 that I decided to cool it with buying games for it until I clear some of the backlog up first.  In the past month, I've been eying Dead or Alive 5 on Amazon for $20 but kept resisting.  Then just these past 2 weeks, it was revealed that Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate (PS Vita version) was going to be released on consoles as well.  This means more levels, more modes, more characters, and more content with the possibility of a $40 price tag.  A trailer was released on Gametrailers today (but I couldn't find the embed so I grabbed another alternate on YT) and it shows the arrival of Momiji from the Ninja Gaiden series.  It won't be released until Fall, so I guess I'll do a bit more waiting before picking up the game.  Hopefully I'll have finished some games before then.

GameLight - Dynasty Warriors 8

I was really surprised to hear a release date for a North America (July 16th, 2013) and even more surprised that the game has been out in Japan a little more than a month now (February 28th, 2013).  I'm definitely excited about the new iteration to the Dynasty Warriors series, but I'm also a bit skeptical.  The reason for such doubt is that Dynasty Warriors 7 was an incredible game.  After the disappointment of DW6, DW7 took everything that was great about their franchise and made one heck of an action game.  The story was told in a much more personal fashion rather than having hacked scenes here and there.  It was emotionally moving and well thought out.  The graphics were made to be a bit more realistic in terms of color palette choices compared to past DW games and was optimized so well that 3x-5x more enemies appeared on screen.  The flow and animation of combat was so smooth and effortless that it allowed a large array of possible combos.  In short, Dynasty Warriors 7 was so great that I wasn't sure if Omega Force/Koei was capable of making something even better.  There have been a lot of videos from the Japanese version of Dynasty Warriors 8 already uploaded online, but I didn't want to watch too much and spoil my experience with the game when I finally get it.  From what I gather, there will be new characters, new weapons, new modes, an affinity mechanic that creates advantages and disadvantages in a fight (think rock-paper-scissors or Fire Emblem), new abilities, and the ability to use 3 different musou attacks with each character.  I'm really surprised at how quickly Dynasty Warriors 8 came out as I was expecting for it to come out on the PS4.  I'll be really excited for a Dynasty Warriors on the PS4 utilizing the next gen technology for consoles.

GameLight - Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires

Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires is sneaking up soon and I didn't even notice.  Expanding Koei's Action Hack-n-Slash game Dynasty Warriors 7, Empires provides various new content to the already addictive war game.  With Empires, players can create their own characters (FINALLY, been waiting for that in the original and Xtreme Legends), build their own faction using those characters, share their characters with other players online, and play Empire mode which adds a whole new dynamic to the game.  Rather than progressively move from one level to the next, the player is presented with the layout of Ancient China and must devise plans of conquering all of it using strategy, tactics, and diplomacy along with their hack-n-slash skills in order to win.  More weapons will be added, and a new system called "favorite weapons" allows certain characters to change their musou attack depending on which weapon they wield.  I'm not sure if I'm ready for Empires yet as I haven't even opened Xtreme Legends to play yet.  This is sure to be one game I'll keep an eye out for this year.  Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires is set to launch on February 26, 2013 exclusively for the Playstation 3.

GameLight - Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge

For those who remembers or played the game, Ryu Hayabusa has an apprentice named Momiji who appeared in Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the Nintendo DS.  Well, it has been revealed that she is making a return and will be a playable character in Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge for the Nintendo Wii U.  Her chest size wasn't that large in Dragon Sword, but perhaps she's more grown up or it just looks different in 3D?  She is capable to wielding a naginata and down multiple foes with its long range and wide arc.  I keep hearing about a 2-player co-op mode, but it's not clear whether it is exclusively for Online play or if it's possible to have one person on the Wii U pad and one on the TV screen.  These new additions and changes to the game has changed my stance on getting the game for the PS3 as the Wii U seems to define the game the developers wanted to release a lot better.  First things first: finish up more games, buy and complete Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma, THEN buy a Wii U and this game.  Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge will release as a launch title for the Nintendo Wii U which supposedly releases this Sunday.  I hope to see Momiji appear in other Ninja Gaiden games in the future.

Retroview – Ninja Gaiden 3 (NES)

Source: Youtube Channel skrizhali

Ninja Gaiden has always been one of my favorite games series from the NES days, despite how incredibly difficult they were and having only beat each one 1-2 times all the way through.  I can’t really say “series” I suppose since I only owned the first and second when I was younger (as all the games I played were the ones my father played) and never played the 3rd one.  I wondered for the longest time why my father never got the 3rd one if he liked the first two in the series.  Fast forward to when I was in college, I came across the series once again during the time and found out that the 3rd iteration in the series had a very diabolical change in its continue system.  In the first two Ninja Gaiden games, a player could restart at the last main checkpoint as many times as they wanted.  In other words, there was an infinite amount of continues.  Games back in the 8-bit days weren’t particularly long and so a lot of them were designed to be very difficult but possible to beat as they all followed a pattern.  So a player would die over and over but would, or at least should, learn from their mistakes and try another method through the section they had trouble with.  This would increase the gameplay time by a significant amount depending on how quickly the player learned all the patterns and tricks.  So what happened in #3?  After continuing about 3 times (I'm not sure anymore), the player faces a true game over and has to start from the very beginning of the game once again.  You know how ludicrous that is?

Anyways, I finally found it in me to sit down and play the game just 2 weekends ago.  The first few things I noticed different about the 3rd one was there was a voice over when Ryu Hayabusa does any actions, there were new sub-weapons, and the player can jump up over the ledge of the wall they’re on (which is a big deal).  As I played, all the same aspects of the past Ninja Gaiden games came rushing back: fast-paced action and platforming, catchy tunes, beautifully detailed graphics, fluid gameplay, challenging passages, and the classic cut-scenes that adds to the story.  I was really enjoying the game when I wasn’t stunned right into a bottomless pit or getting ravaged by 3-5 flying enemies on the screen.  I have to admit that the boss battles were significantly easier compared to the first two other than the very last boss.  I also found a significant problem in the last level that I couldn’t believe the developers overlooked.  The last chapter is one huge level that spans 3-5 sections (I don’t even remember anymore since it was so difficult) and I didn’t hesitate to keep moving forward (meaning I didn’t wait around).  At one point, I ran out of time.  Either you have to move lightning speed or that has to be one of the biggest shenanigans I’ve run into in the Ninja Gaiden series because there was still a LOT more after where I had died.  The check point I got sent back into was quite far and is actually the last check point you’ll get in the game.  If you die at the final boss, you get sent back to that check point just like in the first game.  The final boss wasn’t exactly difficult, just irritating.  But it was easy when I found out what the pattern was.  Then he reveals his “true” form where he doesn’t move but has a lot of projectiles.  Again it was annoying but the pattern was actually pretty easy and I won after figuring it out.  Then there’s a “final” form which takes up half of the screen.  In the “final” form, the boss has a shield that you have to get through.  Between that last check point and the final boss’s room, there was one health recovery.  Between the 3 forms, the player doesn’t regenerate or recover any health at all.  Getting sent back to that last checkpoint wasn’t fun at all.  Still, I completed the game and got the typical ending that I wasn’t surprised about at all.  I think the 3rd iteration had much simpler boss battles and so they weren’t very memorable.  But with having a limited amount of continues, I’m glad it wasn’t “that” difficult or it would have been impossible beating the game.  The new Ninja Gaiden 3 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 released today.  I won’t wait 21 years later to play that one, but I have yet to even finish the new Ninja Gaiden 1 Sigma yet.  Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom was fun and all, but I may or may not revisit the game again.

The game took me approximately 3 hours to finish.

GameLight - Dead or Alive 5

Official Site: http://teamninja-studio.com/doa5/top.html

Dead or Alive is that fighting game with beautiful women and beefy men who deliver strikes so hard that they fall off mountains, break walls, and shatter bones but get right back up to continue fighting.  The game continues its legacy with its fifth installment as the fighting game with breathtaking graphics and powerful physics engine (in one way or another) returns with a surprise.

So many fighting game fans of the Dead or Alive series and Virtua Fighter series are getting excited with announcements and videos of VF's iconic character Akira Yuki joining the roster in Dead or Alive 5.  I grew up playing the Virtua Fighter series but never really got too much into it.  Dead or Alive I played even less of just because no one else had it or played it.  So as many fans of both series are overjoyed with the crossover, I found it to be sort of boring for an announcement of a crossover.  I like Virtua Fighter, but Akira was one of the more boring characters for me.  I liked more of the faster combo characters like Sarah Bryant and Aoi Umenokouji or some of the more obscure characters like Kage-Maru.

What I'm more excited about is that Dead or Alive 5 will be available for Playstation 3 as well as the Xbox 360 rather than making it exclusive to one console as they've had for the past two iterations.  One of the other reasons why I played Dead or Alive so little was because it was always on consoles I didn't have.  With the inclusion of being able to play on the Playstation 3, I might consider picking up my very first Dead or Alive game (if not for the 3DS).  Though I have to consider all the other fighting games coming out as well (BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, The King of Fighters XIII, Soul Calibur V, and Street Fighter X Tekken).  I don't have to worry about it too much at the moment as the game is set to launch in the 4th quarter of this year.  If I do end up getting a 3DS sometime in the summer this year, I'll probably pick up Dead or Alive Dimensions.

GameLight - Warriors Orochi 3

Happy Lunar New Years Everyone!  According to the Eastern Animal Zodiac, it is the year of the Dragon.  Speaking of dragons, the dragon of the Hayabusa clan is returning in a new game; and I'm not talking about Ninja Gaiden 3.  RYU HAYABUSA IS IN WARRIORS OROCHI 3!!!

Source: Youtube Channel KING90I

Oh man, a chill went down my spine when I heard the remixed version of Ryu Hayabusa's original tune from the NES days come on.  I didn't pay much attention to Warriors Orochi 3 after I learned that it wasn't going to be brought over to the Western market early last year.  So it was a huge surprise when I heard today that it was going to be released in North America in March this year!!! (Supposedly March 20th)  Even more surprising was that Ryu Hayabusa of the Ninja Gaiden series was going to be in it!  Not only that, but characters from Warriors: Legends of Troy, Bladestorm, Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll and Dead or Alive are also going to join the huge cast of characters from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors:

Source: Youtube Channel ZhaoYun2011

Altogether, the game has 120+ characters to choose from!  For those unfamiliar with the Warriors Orochi series: It's a spin-off that started with only Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors back on the Playstation 2.  A dimensional rift pulls the warriors of Ancient 3 Kingdom Era China and Sengoku Era Japan together to a strange land where they either join or oppose the Snake King "Orochi" (A snake demon in Japanese culture).  Some major differences in gameplay are the ability to switch between any three characters chosen for battle at any given time, chain attacks from multiple characters together, every individual character has a special attack unique only to them, and your proximity to allied troops has an influence to how they act on the battlefield.  Warriors Orochi is possibly the best spin-off Koei has done for the "Warriors" series and am incredibly happy to hear that it's being brought over.  I'm saddened that I never got around to getting and playing Warriors Orochi 2, but I had anticipated a 3rd one to come out and didn't get it.  So upon hearing that it wasn't being brought over made me lose my interest in pursuing the series any further.  Now I'm more excited than ever about its release, especially with even more collaborated games from within their IP.  If you're new to the series, I highly recommend picking up Warriors Orochi 2.  It's really a lot of fun!  THANK YOU TECMOKOEI!

GameLight - Dynasty Warriors 7

DYNASTY WARRIORS 7!  It's coming out late March early April with new combat systems, new characters, extra timeline, and returning character and weapons Koei took out in DW6.  I am so excited about the new Dynasty Warriors, and I'm sure long time fans are too (especially those wanting everything that was great about DW5 and previous ones before everything changed in DW6 back in DW7).  Dynasty Warriors has had a long history of being a repetitive hack 'n slash with no depth and purpose by critics and the gaming community.  Only those who have followed the Dynasty Warriors series for the past 10 years have been praising Koei for their hard work and dedication to the series each time they revamp the game.  Other past complaints have been Koei's tendency to come out with expansions to each DW game such as Xtreme Legends and Empires.  Most argue that the expansions should have been in the original game to begin with for the full experience of the game.  Spin-offs have started having their own series and iterations of games including Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce, and Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage.

So even after so many iterations and low ratings by critics, why am I still excited about a 7th installment of Dynasty Warriors?  Besides having followed Koei since their Romance of the Three Kingdom days watching my dad play on the NES and having great interest behind the history of the Three Kingdoms era, I am hoping for something truly great from Koei after they had some experience creating a few more games on the Playstation 3.  The combat system for Dynasty Warriors 6 truly was shallow compared to the extensive combo mechanics Dynasty Warriors 2-5 was so well known for and the change in character weaponry with copy animations a la fighting games (like street fighter's Ryu and Ken or Smash Bros. Melee's Marth and Roy) was a great disappointment.  There were interesting changes in DW6 that made the game fresh, but some of the changes took quite a bit of what was great about the game out of it.  Well, here are some of the things to look forward to in Dynasty Warriors 7 that has hopefully improved the game:

Source: http://darkaquamarine.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Rise of the Jin Dynasty
Unfortunately, my Ancient Chinese history isn't up to snuff and so I can't say for sure in what time period the Jin Dynasty took place.  As far as I understand, it's sometime near the end of the Three Kingdoms era (Three Kingdoms 220–280 / Jin Dynasty 265–420 - Wikipedia).  So this means new storylines, new characters, and new battles.  I already like the character Wang Yuanji based on her description and her musou on the video up top at 1:12.  With such a large difference in time periods, will the story in the Jin Dynasty be separate from the Three Kingdoms era entirely?  Sima Yi (usually of Wei) is seen in the characters list of the Jin Dynasty, and it also possesses decedents of those who fought in Wei such as Sima Yi's son Sima Shi, Zhuge Liang's family decendent Zhuge Dan, and Xiahou Yuan's son Xiahou Ba.  From what I remember in the actual history, it was one of Cao Cao's decedents that ends the long war between the Three Kingdoms.  Perhaps it has something to do with the Jin Dynasty?  Not sure, I should really learn the actual history or at least read the translated version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

New Weapon System
According to the description on Koei's site, every character has access to almost all the weapons and can equip two weapons at the same time like in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce (Koei seems to implement new systems and game mechanics every time they tried it out on a spin-off).  From the screenshots, it seems many players of Dynasty Warriors 6 complained about the characters losing their original weapon and thus losing the entirety of what made the character unique and special because each character holds a weapon they used to use prior to DW6 and a 2nd weapon that they wielded in DW6.  The fact that any character can use any weapons really worry me.  If that's truly the case, what's the point of playing any other character if one can do it all?  If it's just the story that's different, then there's a big problem.  Doesn't that just ask players to play with the same character throughout the entire game since they'll practically be the same?  I really like the idea of new weapons and being able to switch between two of them in the middle of battle, but there's a lot of concern about being able to wield any weapon.

Switch Attack
Since characters can hold two weapons in battle now, a special attack called a "switch attack" grants the player with an effect that aides the player in fighting such as a bolt of lightning spreading everywhere or swords flying around the player while they attack after switching weapons in the middle of a combo.  The idea sounds cool, but I wonder how smooth the transition between switching weapons will be.

Musou Attack and EX Attack
Each character has two different musou or "hyper" attack for those who don't know what a musou is.  One is used on the ground like usual and the other can be used in the air.  This could come in handy for certain situations against large groups of enemies or generals that ride on mounts.  The EX attack sound similar to the combo system used in the Samurai Warriors series where an extra Triangle or "heavy attack" can be chained to cause a stronger or longer attack or combo.  I'm hoping that it changes the way combos are done because constantly mashing on the square button with the occasion of the triangle and circle was pretty boring with only 2 different heavy strikes compared to DW5 and below's 7-9 different combo chain.

Growth/Upgrade System
The skill trees, upgrades, weapon looting and such are back.  I didn't mind the implementation of the skill tree since it was much like an RPG game with skill branches and gave the player more control of where to grow in power.  All the items, weapon looting, skill trees, seals and all will implement really well with the additional mode they're adding to DW7.

Conquest Mode
I am super excited for Dynasty Warriors 7 with this additional mode being one of the reasons.  It's a free roam map with mixtures of Adventure, RPG, Strategy, and of course Action Hack 'n Slash.  If anyone has played Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legends on Xtreme Mode, you'll probably get a kick out of Conquest mode.  Xtreme Mode in DW5XL was sort of like a one time RPG adventure where the player chose between three missions upon completion and upgraded weapons by going to blacksmiths while staying replenished with the army by going to the shop.  There will be similar aspects in Conquest mode as well as those from the Empires expansion (which I never played but have seen).  I'd say that Conquest Mode is one of the biggest attractions to the next iteration of the series.

Well, there you have it.  Here's hoping for an awesome game~
