VGCulture - Lil' Guardian Pyro

Official Site: http://www.sourcefilmmaker.com/saxxyawards/
Source: Youtube Channel Harry101UK

The Saxxy Award is a contest hosted by Valve to give people an opportunity to show their creative side to the world using the Source Film Maker Program to produce a short film.  I don't pay much attention to each year's Saxxy Award, but I came across one of the entries while reading NerfNow.  Lil' Guardian Pyro was winner of Best Overall video from the bunch and I could see why.  It had humor, a sense of drama, action that was also charming at the same time, and that tense moment at the end.  Congratulations to the winners!  Click on the top link to check out the other entries that got nominated!

GameLight - TF2 Mann vs. Machine

Official Site: http://www.teamfortress.com/mvm/machines/
Source: Youtube Channel gameinformer

Team Fortress 2 is a free-to-play, team-based, first-person shooter where two teams are pitted against each other to capture flags, points, defeat each other, or pushing carts.  But something new is about to be implemented that will change the game up a bit.

This was a bit unexpected when I heard about it yesterday, but it seems that Valve has been in the works on a true cooperative mode for Team Fortress 2 using some tower defense elements and upgrading systems.  Mann vs. Machine will be a new mode in which 5-players are pitted against waves of robots with all sorts of abilities and arsenal.  As far as I understand, the goal is to protect the main core much like a regular tower-defense game.  Players will take the role of one of the 9 classes in the Team Fortress 2 game to fight, support, and defend against the numerous enemies.  In-between waves, players can purchase upgrades kind of like in "Killing Floor" by using the currency picked up by the defeated robots to get abilities like 5 second invincibility, extra ammo, or a critical hit boost.  All classes will also have modified weapons to fight against these robots such as the ability to pierce through multiple enemies with their gunfire or having an even higher boost from buffs.  This free additional patch to the game will launch tonight at 8PM PST August 15th from what I heard, but I'm not 100% sure.  Cheers to Valve for always updating their multiplayer games and keeping them fresh!

NewNews - Valve be teasing us

Okay, so the Steam Summer Sales didn't start today and that bummed me out.  But for a lot of fans of the Team Fortress 2 series, they're/we're getting majorly teased by the ever-so-close "Meet the Pyro" video that has been asked for years now.  Instead of actually revealing anything today, a promotional site with small update hints are shown for the next three days with a possible new map revealed today along with a new mode and new achievements.  There are two more days of updates before the final reveal on June 27th, 2012.  I guess I'm sort of curious about "Meet the Pyro", but I'm more concerned about having our Steam Summer Sales right now.

NewNews - Play games to get games (Steam Trading)

You know how Blizzard's Diablo 3 is going to have an auction house with real money and how people can sell in-game items for real money?  Well, what if you were able to get real games for trading in-game Team Fortress 2 items?  That'd be cool, right?

Source: Youtube Channel MrSmegheneghan

Well, Valve is working its way to doing just that.  Beside people selling in-game TF2 items for ridiculous prices ($240 for some of them I heard), players can opt to trade a full game on their steam list for an item.  Now, it's not any game a player wishes, but ones that publishers have agreed to and is part of the program that Valve is running.  It's sounds pretty cool, but you'd have to have an awesome items in order to get someone willing to give you a game for it.  Or perhaps some people have games they've already beat and don't want for an item.  Anyways, Valve is using every little unheard method of attracting players to play (and sometimes pay) for Team Fortress 2 as much as possible.  I'm not going to spend any money on in-game items still, but maybe I can score some free games for items I don't want!

VGCulture - Free 2 Play n00bs

This is something I should have noticed before, but Free 2 Play games has quite the assortment of people.  It's not a surprise since the game is "free" and anyone can play it.  The big problem is just that: "ANYONE" can download and join everyone else to play, even the most undesirable, idiotic, or uncooperative players are on there.

Over the weekend, I played some Global Agenda with some friends and convinced them to try the game out since it was free now.  It was a little difficult for everyone since it was new to them, but at least we were able to coordinate a little since I've had the game since last July.  Two of my friends left our party and it was my friend and I with two random people.  Usually when I play mission mode, the other players generally know what they're doing.  But when the mission began, I had one team mate rush in by himself with a melee weapon trying to hack at everything he sees.  Naturally he dies.  He responded to the death by saying "Sorry guys, this is my first time!"  I gave the simple advice telling him "don't rush in and you'll be fine."  And throughout the mission, he was always charging in and got killed repeatedly.  Our other team mate stood in the wide open and pretty much ignored the rest of us which eventually got him killed a few times.  I notice the inexperience that some people have in F2P games since they're usually MMORPGs and everyone's doing their own thing or it's an FPS and pretty much run and gun.  I suppose I notice it a bit when I play League of Legends, but sometimes I'm the n00b playing.  Sometimes, n00bs are hardly the problem in the community of F2P online games.  There are ragers, quitters, hackers, spammers, glitchers, griefers, and many other players that join a game and ruin the game experience for everyone else.  With Team Fortress 2 going free, I don't think it's too big of a problem.  Most players before it became F2P didn't care too much about the objective either, so it usually turns into an endless killing game for everyone.  So even if the quality of F2P online games are getting better and better, the community doesn't seem to improve.  This is very debatable since even retail games have its own bad communities.  Most are to point out players of the Call of Duty series being 7-12 year old little boys screaming every known profanity in the English language while some dude in his mid-20's is laughing their butt off at every little rage they get out of the kid.  I love F2P games, but I'm starting to understand why some people are so against it.  This is especially true for those who used to play a game that was retail before it became F2P such as Global Agenda.  What I do like about the transition to a lot of these games is that servers are a lot more populated now.

NewNews - Team Fortress 2 is Free-to-Play!

Official Site: http://www.teamfortress.com/freetoplay/

Source: Youtube Channel teamfortress

Along with the new video "Meet the Medic", Valve has announced that Team Fortress 2 (TF2) will now be free-to-play!  This is exciting news as I plan to have a LAN party with some friends this weekend and can now add Team Fortress 2 to the list of games we can play.  Team Fortress 2 is a Multiplayer only, First-Person Shooter Action game.  Most would not add the word "Action" to TF2 as it's more FPS than anything else.  But unlike most FPS games, there are a lot of crazy elements that make it more than just a point and shoot sort of game.  For one, killing another player is not the main objective (as most FPS game modes would have for free-for-all and death match).  Team Fortress 2 is (as its name states) a cooperative-intensive multiplayer game that requires skill and tactics in order to obtain a goal.  There are capture points mode, escorting (payload), King of the hill, and there is sort of a team deathmatch where each team tries to survive an entire round without dying, but it still requires team work if victory is wanted.  So TF2 will now run on a micro-transaction basis, which is has been for a while, and rely a lot of their income on people buying items.  That's not a problem since players in the community have proven to be very supportive of the idea and buy items that are $5-$100+ in price.  It's crazy, I wouldn't buy it, but it's working.  I've been playing TF2 since December of 2009 and it have since then accumulated 134 hours of gameplay.  That isn't too much for most players (they usually have 300-1000+ hours), but it was a lot for me considering I played during my last year of college.  I have taken quite a long break from it and still play it once in a while.  The team working on TF2 is incredibly hard working and diligent as they have patched, adjusted, and added contents in the game since its release to optimize the run speed of the game, balance the classes, and added more maps, modes, and items for free (for the most part, until the item shop appeared).

If you've never played or even heard of Team Fortress 2, I suggest you go over to Steampowered.com and download Steam so that you can start playing it.  It's accessible for all levels of play, and you will get better the more you play.  The concept is simple, but obtaining the goal is hard.  I can't wait to play some more TF2!

VGCulture - Crates in TF2

I'm pretty tired from work and from doing 4 game reviews in this one week, so I kind of want to keep this post short.  So Scott Ramsoomair of VGCats finally decided to draw another comic and made a joke on Team Fortress 2, which is something JosuĂ© Pereira of Nerf NOW!! usually does, and this time it was funny!

I actually love Scott's comics.  It has that consistency of his two main cat characters while still making distinctive jokes on specific games.  Problem is, he updates very rarely and a lot of his jokes have been rather dry lately.  This strip being funny aside, I haven't been playing TF2 as religiously as I did when I was still in college.  I purposely cut back from it so that I could experience other games and get projects done, but a part of me really misses it.  The new crate system really bugs me, but it's definitely not tempting for me to buy a key for them (which is not a surprise since I've played 50+ free MMOs and haven't spent a penny).  The way I see it, the team at Valve created the store system to please the players.  It keeps them engaged, offers new ways to play, and doesn't demand that a player pay in order to still play the game.  From what I heard, a player can still acquire the same items in the game randomly like always.  I find that much more exciting because it's very much like an RPG where you stumble upon a rare weapon or a new item.  I found a few of the new items in TF2 and received some from friends, but I end up going back to my original weapons since I find my use in the effects they had (I'm not sure why people hate back burner so much, it's so much fun to hear *ping* *ping* *ping* *ping* *ping* *ping*).  If Gabe Newell is getting rich off the store system, then good for him; I hope that money gets put into good use for a new game (or the usual charity he contributes to).  I respect the man and hope to introduce game-changing elements into the industry like he and his team has in the past.  Everyone can make as many fat jokes about him as much as they want; he's the one laughing at the end of the day, haha.

GameOn - FPS Week last day with Team Fortress 2

[Team Fortress 2 - Valve Corporation - PC/Xbox 360/PS3/Mac OS X]

Source: Youtube Channel RadioactiveCaffeine

Team Fortress 2 is more than just a game; It's a culture.  Team Fortress 2 has generated millions of fan-based materials all over the world such as art pieces, videos, fan-fiction, remix songs, comics, and parodies.  The game brought all gamers, creative minds, and hobbyists together to create things beyond the game and into our everyday lives (yes, I'm talking about Cosplay).

The truth is, the game has no story, no campaign, no background, just the game.  Team Fortress started out as a Quake Mod that was then brought in by Valve to distribute through Steam and then worked on a original game developed by Valve themselves as Team Fortress 2.  It's an Team-Based (or it should!) First-Person Shooter that has two sides fighting for the intelligence (Capture the Flag), an area (Capture Point), or escort a bomb to enemy base (Payload).  Each player is capable of choosing one of nine classes to play as that fulfills a sort of role in the team: offense, defense, and support.  Each of these classes have a personality and accent in their speech that gives them a distinctive personality.  The game is multiplayer-based and played online.

Pros:
-Fast action in a unique FPS experience that plays more like an action game than traditional FPS games
-Dynamics of the game changes each time you play with the different combinations of classes in a team
-Tons of ways to play the game that fits many different styles of play
-Very strong community within the game, there will be plenty of players to play with online
-Graphics are not too demanding and allows many players of any computer specs to play
-Lots of mods and special servers that allows changes in rules and game type
-Developers constantly update the game and maintenance the servers
-Many extra maps, modes, and features are added without charge
-Deals can go as low as $5 for the game and can provide several hundred hours of gameplay

Cons:
-You WILL die...A LOT, it is impossible not to (unless you hack, DON'T HACK!)
-It's very rare to play with people that understand the term "team"
-The game takes a ridiculous amount of time to load and connect to a server
-Hackers, mic spammers, glitchers and other riff-raff frequent in the servers
-Lack of players and Lag in a server makes for an unappealing experience (so d/c and find another)

If you're not a hardcore FPS player and want insane action, I highly recommend Team Fortress 2.  The game is phenomenal as entertainment and as a culture within itself.  The game often gets extra content and will not be charged for it unlike every other FPS game that has released recently.  I am up to about 124 hours of gameplay on Team Fortress 2 and I got it Christmas of 2009.  The only game I have played recently to have gotten that amount of hours is League of Legends with 128 hours.  For those of you who don't like unrealistic gunfights and whacky action, I suggest one of the 4 games mentioned earlier this week.  Other than that, go get Team Fortress 2 when it goes down in price this holiday (sale for this game frequently shows up).
