All weekend long, I kept seeing articles and blog posts of "Everquest Next" being the game that'll change MMORPGs and break away from the old tired structure that the original Everquest built and World of Warcraft popularized. Guild Wars 2 was the game that everyone said will change MMORPGs and break the structure and all. It did change some things about MMORPGs and it was a lot of fun. But when every MMORPGs starts saying that, it stops being marketable phrases to use. Fortunately, there are gameplay and demonstrations shown which convinced me otherwise of what they've been saying. Destructible environments, multi-altitude plains, clothing and hair that react to the weather around the characters, etc. shows that they are trying new things out. I have to say that I'm impressed and am looking forward to seeing more of the game in the future.

NewNews - Wizardry Online on Steam
Official Site: https://www.wizardrythegame.com/index.vm
Steam Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/221360/
Source: Youtube Channel MachinimaTrailer
The brutal, unforgiving MMORPG that is Wizardry Online is now officially released. This means deleting the Beta client version that anyone might have and downloading the new client. If that sounds troublesome, then open up your Steam client from there as Steam now supports Wizardry Online. The Wizardry series has been around since the cRPG days where players had to memorize spells, make their own maps of the dungeon, and had the possibility of losing their entire party due to a trap. Wizardry Online brings those many devious aspects into a modern Action-MMORPG with open PvP and Perma-death. With Wizardry Online on Steam, a special pack can be bought (Adventure Kit), downloading the client is a lot easier, and the access of Steam's overlay will allow players to talk to their friends while in-game.
I participated in the beta and have mixed feelings about the game. The graphics are definitely outdated by many years. The music feel very much like a JRPG (yes, it's a Japanese developed online game). The overall look of the game has influences from Final Fantasy XI and Demon's Souls. The game is certainly different from other MMORPGs, that's for sure. Now that it's on Steam, I am definitely willing to give it another go and play around further into the game.

Retroview - Everquest 2
Official Site: http://www.everquest2.com/

Everquest 2 is an MMORPG and is sequel to one of the most influential games in 3D online RPGs. Everquest 2 released around the same time as World of Warcraft and was eventually overshadowed by it (though Everquest 2 still had its community and has kept up till even now). A few months ago, I finally decided to give Everquest 2 a spin as it has gone free-to-play (sort of) and is also downloadable on the Steam platform. The free-to-play version is rather limited as many functions and content is locked until the player pays for them. There are quite a few classes to choose from, but the free-to-play version only gave me (was it 2?) a few choices. Getting through the beginning parts of the game, I saw history of MMORPG unfolds itself as many familiar traits revealed itself: picking up quests, gathering, looting, the user-interface, the combat style, etc. Between as early as 1999 from the original Everquest till now, there has been very little change to the 3D MMORPG genre. Sure, there have been changes in graphics, story, and quality, but the core concepts and mechanics haven't changed very much. It felt odd playing EQ2 since it felt like I've played it forever, even though it was my first time seeing it and playing it. What I did notice is a lot of the problems or lack of quality the game had. The animation for characters running was rigid and awkward, the looting system was clunky and annoying, combat was laggy and didn't register along side the graphics, the environment clashed with the objects which made it difficult to distinguish enemies sometimes, etc. It made me understand why World of Warcraft has been highly praised ever since the early days of its release despite having nearly identical game mechanics with other MMORPGs prior to 2004. I'm actually really surprised they didn't change much of the game to refine some of their game mechanics after all these years. I didn't enjoy playing Everquest 2 too much, even if it was just the first few hours; however, I'm glad I did as it revealed a lot about MMORPGs and its history and evolution. If I didn't have such a crazy backlog of games, I would be more willing to play more of it. Still, that shouldn't stop anyone from trying it out of it they are curious about it. Everquest 2 can be free to play on their official website or downloaded through the Steam platform.

NewNews - Sad day for the Game Industry
For whatever the reason may be, Capcom has decided to cancel Megaman Universe.
Source: Youtube Channel GrafWutzenstein
Sony Online Entertainment cancels The Agency and lays off 205 of its employees and closes 3 studios down.
Source: Youtube Channel machinima
And THQ lays off 33 of its employees between Kaos Studios and Volition. And they just finished making Homefront too.
Economy still suffers and companies have to make some sacrifices and decisions to avoid getting bankrupt or shut down entirely. It's already hard enough for people with little to no experience in the game industry to find a position to fill, but to have veteran employees having losing their positions and apply to those same position makes it harder for everyone. If you're too experienced, they may not want to hire you in fear of having to pay too much. I do hope those affected by the lay offs can get back on their feet soon, but I also reach out to those who are still looking to get into the industry.
